ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior third baseman Taylor Bump and sophomore designated player Lauren Esman recorded moonshots in the second and fourth innings, respectively, as the No. 22-ranked University of Michigan softball team shook off an initial deficit to defeat Maryland, 4-2, in the series opener on Friday evening (April 16) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field.
The Terrapins took an early lead with a two-out solo homer in the top of the first inning, but Michigan (18-4, 18-4 Big Ten) got it back and then some with a three runs in the second. Fifth-year senior right fielder Haley Hoogenraad evened the score with an RBI single up the middle and, just two pitches later, Bump launched a two-run shot deep to straightaway center field -- her second home run this season.
Esman, who went 3-for-3 and was a triple shy of the cycle, padded the Wolverine lead with a one-out solo homer in the fourth, depositing a no-doubter into the top row of the right-field grandstand. It was her first long ball of the season and second of her collegiate career.
Maryland (11-14, 11-14 Big Ten) narrowed the final score with a two-out run after a walk, throwing error and tough-play infield single to the left of the pitching circle before U-M forced a groundout to short for the final out.
Senior LHP Meghan Beaubien (7-2) allowed just the two hits in the first and seventh frames and a pair of walks while striking out six Terrapin batters.
Michigan will resume the weekend series with a 2 p.m. twinbill Saturday (April 17) -- now slated to start an hour later than originally scheduled after the Big Ten Network picked up the first game. The nightcap will be streamed live on Big Ten Network+.
