CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- Led by a trio of top-five finishes by Hannah Waller, the University of Michigan women's track and field team turned in strong performances on the first day of the B1G Fighting Illini Relays on Friday (April 23), held at the same Illinois Demirjian Park complex that will host next month's Big Ten Outdoor Championships.
Waller posted one of the fastest 100-meter performances in school history and added a solid long jump as she finished fourth in both events.
Crossing the line in a career-best 11.71 seconds (+1.5m/s) in the straightaway dash, Waller moved up to No. 8 in school history in the event. Though she did not match her long jump mark from last week that moved her to No. 9 in U-M history, she did post a solid 5.72m (18 feet, 9.25 inches) (+5.2m/s) in difficult wind conditions.
She finished the day with a career-best 24.38 (+3.3m/s) for fifth over 200 meters.
In the field, the pole vault duo of Mia Manson and Jessica Mercier both cleared 3.91m (12-10) to finish fifth and sixth, respectively, in the invitational section of the event.
Rounding out Michigan's top-10 finishes in either finals or invitational sections on the track were Michaiah Thomas in the 110-meter hurdles and Ziyah Holman over 800 meters. Thomas took sixth in the hurdles in 14.04 (+0.5m/s), while Holman nearly cracked 2:10 with a 2:10.39 for ninth overall.
Michigan has entries in the high jump on Saturday to conclude the weekend at Illinois, beginning at noon CDT.
