ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- For the second consecutive game, the No. 23-ranked University of Michigan baseball team had the winning run at the plate in the ninth inning only to come up short as the Wolverines were defeated by Rutgers, 3-2, on Sunday (April 25) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.

Rutgers (14-13, 14-13 Big Ten) became the first team to win a weekend series from the Wolverines.

It was an uphill battle all day for Michigan, which loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning but came away empty-handed.

Rutgers took the lead in the third inning behind a Ryan Lasko two-run homer to left, and the Scarlet Knights made it 3-0 in the fourth inning after a sacrifice fly.

Michigan got to Rutgers starter Brent Teller in the seventh inning. Benjamin Sems walked to lead off and Ted Burton launched a curveball high over the wall in left-center to make it a 3-2 ballgame.

The Wolverines continued to threaten late in the game, but Clark Elliott, Jimmy Obertop and Sems all had long fly balls pulled in at the wall as the visitors held on.

Teller had a career day for Rutgers, allowing two hits while striking out eight batters in his 7.1 innings of work. Jacob Denner (3-1) took the loss for U-M, allowing six hits and all three runs over five innings while striking out seven batters.
