COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Griffin Mazur launched a three-run home run in the seventh inning to propel the No. 25-ranked University of Michigan baseball team to a 5-2 win on Saturday (April 3) in a game played at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium on the campus of the University of Maryland.
Three Michigan pitchers limited the league-leading Northwestern offense to just four hits in the game while combining for 14 strikeouts.
U-M starter Steven Hajjar retired the first 11 batters of the game, six via strikeout, before issuing a two-out, full-count walk in the fourth inning.
Michigan grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning as Jordon Rogers singled sharply through the right side, stole second and eventually scored a wild pitch in a game otherwise marked by loud outs off the Wolverines' bats.
Northwestern got to Hajjar in the sixth and took a 2-1 lead on back-to-back home runs by Ethan O'Donnell and Anthony Calarco.
Michigan tied the game in its half of the inning as Ted Burton drilled a two-out liner over second base and hustled it into a double to score Benjamin Sems, who had doubled with one out.
The Wildcats put a pair of runners on base with two outs in the seventh inning, chasing Hajjar from the game in favor of Joe Pace, who induced an easy grounder to get out of the inning. Hajjar's final line was 6.2 innings, three hits, two runs, one walk and 10 strikeouts.
Michigan reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the frame in Mazur's two-out, three-run homer to center field to score Danny Zimmerman (walk) and Christian Molfetta (single).
Pace (2-0) earned the win with another impressive effort in which he struck out two batters in 1.1 innings of hitless relief. Willie Weiss earned the save with two strikeouts in the ninth inning.
Molfetta, Sems and Burton each had two hits.
The Wolverines and Wildcats will conclude their series on Sunday (April 4) at 11:30 a.m. before U-M completes its day with a 3:30 p.m. game against host Maryland. Both games will be streamed live on Big Ten Network+.
