COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland erased a pair of three-run deficits and scored 14 straight runs as the Terrapins defeated the University of Michigan by a score of 17-7 in college baseball action Monday (April 5) at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
No. 25-ranked Michigan will return to action on Friday (April 9) with the start of a three-game series against Ohio State at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Maryland claimed a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a leadoff single, wild pitch, stolen base and sacrifice fly.
Michigan answered with four runs in the second inning. Jimmy Obertop continued his hot streak with a solo jack down the right-field line. Additional runs came home on a wild pitch, an RBI groundout from Tito Flores, and an RBI single from Jordon Rogers.
Maryland's Tommy Gardner lifted a two-run homer in the bottom of the frame to make it a 4-3 game. Christian Molfetta matched that homer with a two-run job of his own in the fourth inning as Michigan regained a three-run advantage.
The home runs continued to fly as Benjamin Cowles led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo homer before the Terrapins plated four runs against three U-M pitchers in the fifth inning on just two hits and a bevy of walks and errors. Eight U-M pitchers totaled 11 strikeouts, six free passes, five hit batsmen and four wild pitches in the game.
The Terps then broke it open in the sixth with seven runs on five hits, two of which were misplayed into doubles, two walks, a hit batter, a balk and a wild pitch to take a commanding 15-6 lead.
In his Maize and Blue debut, freshman Brandon Lawrence tacked on a pinch-hit solo home run in the ninth to cap the scoring.
