ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Mid-distance action will take center stage for the University of Michigan women's track and field team this weekend as the endurance crew -- as well as a contingent of sprinters and pole vaulters -- travel to Bloomington, Ind., this Friday (April 9) for the B1G Indiana Invitational #2.
A lineup of 19 Wolverines will be contesting the 800-meter, 1,500-meter and 3,000-meter distances -- or some combination thereof -- over the course of two days at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex at Indiana University. Among that group are All-Americans Meg Darmofal, Lauren Fulcher, Katelynne Hart, Ziyah Holman, Alice Hill, Aurora Rynda and Ericka VanderLende, as well as Big Ten cross country Freshman of the Year Samantha Tran and past Big Ten scorers Kathryn House, Jena Metwalli, Raquel Powers and Annie Taylor.
Reigning Big Ten indoor champion Jessica Mercier leads the Wolverines' dynamic young pole vault group into action, while Hannah Waller headlines the sprints group.
The competition will feature only teams from the Big Ten, according to conference COVID-19 policy.
Due to inclement weather expected on Saturday, the previously scheduled two-day competition has been condensed to a single day on Friday. Both track and field events begin at 3 p.m. ET, with action expected to wrap up at 10:30 p.m. ET.
Once entries are finalized, this posting will be updated with more details and a full schedule of when to watch the Wolverines.
Fans can follow along with the action by way of live results from Indiana. Updates will also be provided via the team's official social media accounts.
Notes and Outlook
• Ziyah Holman raced the 800 meters for the first time in her career last weekend, clocking a 2:13.56. The first-year sensation excelled over the 400-meter and 600-meter distances during the winter, setting school records in both events and winning Big Ten title in the former.
• Jessica Mercier became the first woman in school history to win the Big Ten Indoor Championships pole vault title this past winter, and is aiming to become Michigan's first to sweep the indoor and outdoor titles this spring. She opened her season at 4.00m (13 feet, 1.5 inches) last month. She could be joined by teammate Mia Manson as the first pair of Michigan women to clear both 3.90m and 4.00m in the same season.
• After missing the 2021 indoor campaign, Aurora Rynda returned with a strong 2:07.39 opener to finish third at the B1G North Florida Invitational this past weekend. The two-time Big Ten Indoor 600-meter champion is Michigan's top-ranked competitor so far this outdoor season at No. 34 nationally.
• Waller is impressing both on the track and in the field in her debut outdoor season at Michigan. She leads the Wolverines at 100 meters in 11.84 seconds (+1.8m/s wind), in the long jump at 5.82m (19 feet, 1.25 inches) and in the triple jump at 12.35m (40-6.25).
