BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- On a final day at the B1G Billy Hayes Invitational at Indiana that featured both top-end speed and distance depth, the two joined forces to conclude a fine day for the Wolverines.
Featuring relay carries by Big Ten champions Ziyah Holman and Aurora Rynda, Michigan won the meet-finale 4x400 relay in historic and Big Ten-leading fashion to cap a day that featured strong individual performances from both women, among many others.
The quartet of Chika Amene, Hannah Waller, Rynda and Holman passed the baton four times around the track in 3:36.86, good for a new Big Ten lead and the third-fastest time in school history outdoors.
Amene opened with a solid 56.5-second leg, with Rynda and Waller posting 54-second splits. Holman took the baton and blasted a 51.4-second final lap to secure the win by a quarter of a second over Iowa.
It was the second victory of the day for Holman, who also claimed the title at 400 meters earlier in the afternoon in a collegiate career-best 52.45 seconds to remain undefeated in six races at the distance in her Michigan career. She came within 0.02 seconds of taking down the program's longest-standing school record, Joyce Wilson's 52.43 standard from the 1985 Big Ten Outdoor Championships.
Though Rynda's individual performance from earlier in the day may not have come in a victory, it was a personal best for her among a group of strong performances from the Wolverines. Less than an hour before her 4x400 relay leg, Rynda slashed nearly seven seconds off her career-best at 1,500 meters to clock 4:23.18 for eighth overall.
She was one of four top-10 finishers for the Wolverines in the race, including fourth-place Katelynne Hart in a career-best 4:21.40, fifth-place Lucy Petee in a career-best 4:21.69 and ninth-place Meg Darmofal in 4:23.43.
The average time needed to advance as one of 48 qualifiers to the NCAA East Preliminaries over the past three years is just shy of 4:24, putting most of them in better position to qualify to the NCAA postseason.
The 4x400 relay team was not the only team in the winners circle on Saturday, as the 4x100 relay of Ameia Wilson, Lauren Morgan, Hanna Hearn and Waller took the win in 45.57 seconds for the 10th-fastest time in school history, jumping from No. 9 in the conference this year to No. 5.
Also performing well in the sprints was Michaiah Thomas, who was fifth in the 100m hurdles in 14.06 seconds.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Wolverines closed out the weekend at the Jesse Owens Classic on a high note with four top-five finishes, including a pair in the pole vault.
Mia Manson and Jessica Mercier both cleared 3.98m (13 feet, 0.75 inches) in the vault to finish third and fourth, respectively. The mark was a collegiate outdoor best for Manson, as the duo comes closer each week to becoming the first pair of Wolverines to both clear four meters in the same competition.
Focusing on a number of the components of her signature heptathlon event throughout the weekend, Theresa Mayanja tied her career-best in the 100-meter hurdles at 14.00 seconds (+3.5m/s) in the prelims, and finished fifth in the final at 14.09 (+2.4m/s).
Thrower Amanda Schaare was fifth in the shot put at 15.09m (49-6), and added in a sixth-place finish in the discus 48.83m (160-2) for good measure.
