ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team received a standout pitching performance from Jacob Denner on Sunday (May 16) in a 6-1 victory over No. 21-ranked Indiana to earn a weekend-series win at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium.
Four Michigan pitchers held the potent Hoosiers offense in check, scattering five hits while striking out 10 batters with key efforts in the late innings.
Michigan took a 2-0 lead in the second inning as Griffin Mazur delivered a sacrifice fly to right field to score Benjamin Sems (single), and Tito Flores followed with a hard double off the wall in left to score Ted Burton (single) from first base.
Burton helped U-M to a 3-0 lead in the fourth when he led off with a ringing double off the center-field wall and came around on a fielder's choice and a wild pitch.
Morgan Colopy got Indiana on the board in the fifth when he led off by taking an 88-mph fastball from Denner (4-3) over the right-field wall for his fifth homer of the season.
Denner was sensational for Michigan, working into the seventh inning before being removed following a double to right by Colopy with one out. The lefty allowed just four hits and a walk while striking out six batters in his 6.1 innings of work. Blake Beers came on and got out of the inning thanks to fastball that rose to 97 mph, earning a strikeout and a fielder's choice to shortstop.
Michigan went to closer Willie Weiss in the eighth inning. Weiss struck out the first batter he saw but walked the next two hitters and U-M went to graduate student Will Proctor in a jam. Proctor got a pair of grounders, including one with the tying run on second base.
Michigan got some breathing room in the bottom of the eighth as Sems and Burton singled with one out before Flores lifted a shallow fly to center that fell for an RBI double. Jordon Rogers then fought off a tough pitch, rolling a grounder to second that went for a two-run error when Paul Toetz threw the ball away.
Proctor worked quickly in the ninth, shaking off a U-M error to retire the next three batters, including two via strikeout for his first save of the season.
Burton's three hits led the way while Sems and Flores each added two hits against IU's vaunted pitching staff.
Michigan is back in action Friday (May 21) when they open a three-game set against Maryland at Ray Fisher Stadium. First ptch is scheduled for 5 p.m. and the game will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.
