
U-M Falls to No. 1 Maryland in Big Ten Tournament Semifinals

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The fifth-seeded University of Michigan men's lacrosse team fell to top-seeded and No. 1-ranked Maryland 16-8 on Thursday (May 6) in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals at Panzer Stadium on the campus of Penn State.
Michigan (3-9) took an early lead against Maryland (11-0) for the second straight contest between the teams, with sophomore Josh Zawada (12:06) and graduate student Tyler Papa (11:20) marking tallies in the opening three minutes. With U-M leading 2-0, Maryland went on to score the next six goals, with four coming from Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year Jared Bernhardt, to take a 6-2 lead.
Freshman Michael Boehm put an end to U-M's 15-plus-minute scoreless streak, canning his first marker of the day at 9:57 of the second quarter to cut the Maryland lead to 6-3. The two sides went on to trade goals the rest of the half, with the Terps holding an 8-4 lead at the intermission.
» U-M jumped out to a 2-0 lead early before surrendering the next six goals to trail five minutes into the second quarter.
» Josh Zawada and Jake Bonomi each scored a pair of goals to pace Michigan. Zawada added two assists to post four points in the game.
» The loss concludes U-M's season with a 3-9 overall record.
In the opening half, U-M saw markers from four different goal scorers, and junior faceoff specialist Nick Rowlett went 8-for-12 at the dot with five ground balls.
Zawada cut the Terrapins lead to 8-5 at the 12:38 mark of the third, and a tally from sophomore Jake Bonomi at 9:35 made the tally 9-6, but then Bernhardt scored a pair to make the score 11-6 with 7:45 to go in the third.
Trailing 14-6 entering the fourth, U-M cut the Maryland lead in half at the 13-minute mark with graduate student Avery Myers' first of the contest off a feed from Zawada in close. Zawada marked his second helper of the contest just over six minutes later, feeding Bonomi for his second goal of the day at 6:50 to bring U-M within six at 14-8. Maryland went on to add two more tallies, including Bernhardt's eighth of the game, to close out the victory.
The loss puts an end to U-M's Big Ten-only season. U-M compiled a 3-9 overall record and took home a slew of Big Ten honors with Rowlett earning first team All-Big Ten and Zawada taking home second-team accolades. The Wolverines also made their first Big Ten Tournament appearance and earned the first Big Ten Tournament win in program history.
