NEW ORLEANS, La. -- A program-record 15 men from the University of Michigan track and field team were recognized Thursday (July 22) for their accomplishments in both athletics and academics with All-Academic honors from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
The Wolverines excelled in competition this academic year with a runner-up Big Ten finish and record numbers of qualifiers to the NCAA East Prelims and NCAA Outdoor Championships, and many of those student-athletes also excelled in the classroom.
Last year's total of 11 honorees had been the previous program record.
Michigan also earned USTFCCCA All-Academic Team honors for the fifth year in a row.
All-Americans Tom Brady, Tom Dodd, Andrew Liskowitz and Devin Meyrer all earned the honor to go along with their athletic accomplishments.
Meyrer earned the award for the third time in his career, as did Roland Amarteifio and Max Wagner.
This marked the second such award for both Vail Hartman and Mason Mahacek.
Earning the award for the first time overall were Dubem Amene, Brady, Dodd, Nick Foster, Jacob Lee, Austin Lin, Liskowitz, Oli Raimond, Thomas Shilgalis and Josh Zeller.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade-point average of 3.25 or better and have met one of two athletic standards. For the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org. For the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
Liskowitz was a first-team All-American in the outdoor shot put in the final collegiate competition of his Michigan career, bringing his All-America total in the event to six.
Dodd also was a first-team All-American in the indoor mile with a seventh-place finish, and qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships at 1,500 meters.
Brady was 12th in the indoor 3,000-meter final to earn second-team All-America honors.
Amarteifio, Amene, Lin and Hartman all qualified to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 4x400 relay, but the team did not finish the race. Likewise, Zeller qualified for the outdoor national meet but was unable to finish in the 110-meter hurdles semifinals.
