ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With four of five starters among the top five individually, the University of Michigan women's golf team took a commanding 12-shot lead Monday (Sept. 13) with a six-under-par 562 total for the first 36 holes of the Wolverine Invitational at the U-M Golf Course.
"Today was an absolute blast," said U-M coach Jan Dowling. "The team performed like they know they can on their home course, and that is very satisfying for a player. The entire team was very disciplined all day -- in decision making, emotions and when to be aggressive -- and the result was 32 birdies. Our group is so excited for tomorrow's opportunity."
With the starting five posting half of its 10 rounds below par while collecting 32 total birdies, Michigan posted back-to-back rounds that eclipsed the previous course record for the women's tournament. First, U-M's 280 (-4) topped the previous mark of 283 by USC in the 2007 NCAA regional first round by three shots. U-M followed that with a 282 (-2) tally in the second round.
In the Maize and Blue's first event at the U-M Golf Course in nine years, Michigan set the pace in the morning with the third lowest round in program history thanks to three sub-par Wolverine totals. Junior Mikaela Schulz tied her career low, using six birdies to card a 68 (-3), while sophomore Monet Chun rallied for a 69 (-2). After four bogeys in her first seven holes, Chun was four over before catching fire and posting six birdies, including five on the front nine, over her last 11 holes. With 15 pars and a pair of birdies, junior Hailey Borja gave the Wolverine three in the red with her season-opening 70 (-1).
In the second 18 of the day, the Wolverines got off to another strong start and managed to hold on for a 282 (-2) total. Senior Ashley Lau posted a team-best 69 (-2), while Schulz followed with a 70 (-1), tying her for the individual lead with a 138 (-4) total. Borja added an even-par 71, while senior Sophia Trombetta etched a 72 (+1) for the Wolverines.
Schulz is atop the leaderboard with Iowa State's Liyana Durisic (71-67/138). Borja sits fourth at one-under 141, while Lau and Chun are tied for fifth at even-par 142. Trombetta posted tallies of 74 and 72 and is tied for 24th at 146.
The season-opening event will conclude with a final 18 holes Tuesday morning with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m.
