ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team (14-2, 5-1 Big Ten) finishes a two-game road swing Sunday (Jan. 16), traveling east to face No. 8-ranked Maryland (12-4, 4-1 Big Ten) at 5 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN, Michigan's third appearance on the network this season.
Wolverine Notes
• The game at Maryland will feature three players who helped USA Basketball to the gold medal at the 2021 AmeriCup over the summer in Naz Hillmon, along with Maryland's Ashley Owusu and Diamond Miller. It was the first time for each of them playing at the senior level of USA Basketball. Hillmon started five of six games played, averaging 11.8 points and 7.8 rebounds in 21.3 minutes per game, earning her third gold medal with USA Basketball (U18 FIBA Americas and U19 FIBA World Cup).
• Michigan is looking for its first-ever win over Maryland in College Park. U-M knocked off Maryland 71-65 in the 2017-18 regular-season finale at Crisler (Feb. 22, 2018) for its lone win in the series against the Terps. Michigan is making its first trip to College Park since the 2019-20 season, dropping a 70-55 contest right after the holiday break (Dec. 28, 2019).
• Maryland is the third top-10 team Michigan is facing this season, as U-M dropped a road contest at then-No. 10 Louisville before getting a neutral-site win over then-No. 5 Baylor. Michigan has three wins this year over ranked teams in No. 16 Oregon State, No. 5 Baylor and No. 25 Ohio State.
• Michigan is off to a 14-2 start, tying the best mark in program history through 16 games. The 2012-13 squad also started 14-2 through 16 games on the strength of a 10-game winning streak after a couple of early-season losses. The 2012-13 season was the first in Ann Arbor for head coach Kim Barnes Arico.
• Michigan's contest at Penn State (Jan. 13) marked the first time since the season opener on Nov. 9 that all 15 players on the roster were available to play. Most notably, senior Amy Dilk suffered a knee injury less than a minute into the first game before working her way back since the calendar hit 2022. Dilk's return nearly coincided with freshman Laila Phelia missing the last three games before she returned at Penn State. Michigan has used six different starting lineups this season, with only Danielle Rauch, Emily Kiser and Maddie Nolan playing in all 16 games.
• After hitting just one three-pointer in a loss at Nebraska (Jan. 5), Michigan has hit 16 triples over the last two games on 53.3 percent shooting. U-M hit a season-high nine three-pointers against Rutgers (Jan. 9), connecting on a 60 percent (9-for-15) clip. The Wolverines followed that up by hitting 46.7 percent (7-for-15) at Penn State (Jan. 13), including a perfect 5-for-5 mark in the first quarter. Junior Maddie Nolan has spearheaded the attack these last two games, hitting 7-of-11 from deep.
• This is the first of two contests scheduled between Michigan and Maryland this season, with the Terps slated to travel to Ann Arbor on Feb. 20. Michigan's home-and-home Big Ten opponents are Maryland, Michigan State, Ohio State, Iowa and Wisconsin.
• U-M has a trio of double-figure scorers in Naz Hillmon (20.1 ppg), Leigha Brown (15.5 ppg) and Emily Kiser (10.6 ppg). The three account for 57.7 percent of Michigan's offense, while shooting an even 50 percent from the floor as a group. They combined for 51 of Michigan's 74 points at Penn State (Jan. 13).
• No. 8 Maryland (12-4, 4-1 Big Ten) did not play this past week, with its last game an 87-73 win at Minnesota on Jan. 9. On the season, the Terrapins are averaging 83.3 points per game on 44.9 percent shooting, while allowing 67.8 points per game on 42.6 percent shooting. Maryland has five players scoring in double figures in Angel Reese (18.2 ppg, 10.8 ppg), Ashley Owusu (16.3 ppg), Katie Benzan (12.3 ppg), Chloe Bibby (11.4 ppg) and Diamond Miller (11.3 ppg).
