Michigan Routs No. 8 Maryland to Earn Second Top-10 Win

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's basketball team scored 15 of the final 20 points of the first quarter for a 10-point lead after 10 minutes and led by as many as 26 points in a 69-49 win over No. 8-ranked Maryland on Sunday evening (Jan. 16) at Xfinity Center.
The win is the first for Michigan at Maryland and snapped the Terrapins' nation-leading 31-game home winning streak.
U-M had a trio of double-figure scorers, led by Maddie Nolan who hit a career-best seven triples for 21 points. Leigha Brown turned in 15 points, four assists and three boards, with Laila Phelia chipping in 11 points and three boards off the bench. Naz Hillmon had nine points, eight boards and two blocks as Michigan held Maryland to just 31.4 percent (16-for-51) shooting from the field. U-M also owned the glass, grabbing 38 rebounds to 23 for Maryland.
Michigan struck first, taking a 5-2 lead on a Nolan triple at the 8:28 mark before Maryland answered with five straight for a 7-5 lead in the early going.
The teams went back-and-forth over the next several minutes before U-M used a 9-0 run to turn an 11-8 deficit into a 17-11 lead. Emily Kiser ignited the run with a three-point play, with her, Brown and Phelia each scoring buckets during the spurt.
U-M took a 26-16 lead after the first quarter on the strength of hitting its first seven shots from the field.
After the teams combined for 42 points in the first quarter, there were just a combined 11 points scored in the second as Michigan held Maryland to only three points.
Michigan scored five of the first eight points of the frame, with Hillmon converting on her first shot at the 5:59 mark to force a Maryland timeout as Michigan's lead grew to 31-10.
Hillmon got a chase-down block at the end of the quarter, sending Michigan to the locker room with a 34-19 lead. Michigan held Maryland to just three points, its fewest points scored in a quarter since quarters were implemented.
U-M opened the third quarter on a 12-4 run to double up Maryland (46-23), forcing a Terps timeout at the 6:36 mark. Nolan hit a pair of triples during the spurt, with Brown accounting for the other six points.
Maryland tried to make a small run in the third, but Michigan had an answer each time, outscoring the Terps by nine, 20-11, to head to the fourth with a 54-30 lead.
The Terps cut Michigan's lead to 19 with 7:39 to go, but Hillmon answered with a layup the other way on the next possession. Michigan's lead never dipped below 20 the rest of the way.
U-M is back at Crisler Center on Thursday (Jan. 20), hosting Wisconsin at 7 p.m.
