ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team kicked off action as the host of the three-day Michigan Invitational on Friday (Jan. 14) at the Varsity Tennis Center. U-M faced off against Ohio State in doubles and Notre Dame in singles.
Michigan's sophomore duo of Kari Miller and Jaedan Brown paced U-M on the doubles court, getting a 6-4 win over Ohio State's Isabelle Boulais and Kolie Allen.
Michigan and Notre Dame split the eight singles matches between them.
Junior Andrea Cerdan made quick work of Maeve Koscielski, dropping just two games in a 6-0, 6-2 win as the first Wolverine off court.
Freshman Julia Fliegner was equally impressive in her 14th singles win of the season, dropping just one game in each set en route to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Maria Olivia Castedo.
Miller was the lone Wolverine to get a singles and doubles win on the afternoon, dispatching of Page Freeman in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1. After taking advantage of a late break to win the first set, it was all Miller in the second as she raced out to a 3-0 lead to wrap up the win in straight sets.
Junior Nicole Hammond rallied from a first-set loss for a 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 win against Yashna Yellayi in Michigan's final singles win of the afternoon. With the players splitting the first two sets, Hammond jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the deciding set. Yellayi stormed back to tie the set at 5-5, but Hammond came through with the break of serve in the next game for a 6-5 lead. The Wolverine served out the match in the next game for Michigan's fourth singles win of the afternoon.
Back in action for Michigan for the first time since suffering a knee injury last April was sophomore Gala Mesochoritou. She fell in her first action, dropping a hard-fought 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 match to Carrie Beckman. Mesochoritou fought back several times in the third set after falling behind both 3-1 and 5-3 but ultimately could not complete the comeback.
U-M continues play at the Michigan Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 15), playing Duke in doubles at 1 p.m. Singles against Ohio State will follow at the Varsity Tennis Center.
