Wolverines to Head to Bloomington for Sunday Tilt at Indiana

The University of Michigan men's basketball team (8-7, 23 Big Ten) heads back to the road, traveling to Bloomington on Sunday (Jan. 23) to square off with Indiana (14-4, 5-3 Big Ten) at the Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on CBS with Spero Dedos (play-by-play) and Dan Bonner (analyst) on the call.
The Scene Setter
• When U-M travels to Bloomington, it will mark the Wolverines ninth game away from Ann Arbor this season.
• U-M is in the middle of a three-game stretch of Big Ten single plays -- Maryland (W, 83-64; Jan. 18), at Indiana (Jan. 23) and Northwestern (Jan. 26). U-M's other single plays were Minnesota (L, 75-65; Dec. 11), and upcoming at Penn State (Feb. 8) and at Wisconsin (Feb. 20).
• In the last two weeks, Michigan has battled COVID-19 and protocols -- as four players missed the game at Rutgers (Jan. 4) before postponing the MSU and Purdue games. U-M was without Hunter Dickinson and Brandon Johns Jr. at Illinois (Jan. 14), but Dickinson made his return against Maryland (Jan. 18). Johns remains a game-time decision.
Breaking Down the Wolverines
• Hunter Dickinson leads Michigan in scoring (16.4) and rebounding (8.6). Last season as a consensus All-America second teamer, he led U-M with 14.1 points (first frosh since 2018-19; Ignas Brazdeikis) and 7.4 rebounds (first frosh since 2012-13; Mitch McGary).
• Dickinson has 12 double-figure scoring games with a team-best four 20+ point games, including a season-best 27 in the season opener against Buffalo (Nov. 10).
• Hunter Dickinson has a team-best six games of 10+ rebounds, which has led to a team-best five double-doubles.
• In 28 games last season, Dickinson had 25 total assists. In 14 games, he surpassed that with 31 -- including a career-best six against Maryland (Jan. 18). He has seven games of 3+ assists this season.
• Hunter Dickinson has posted a team-best five games with 10+ field goals, shooting 60.1 percent from the field, which is third in the Big Ten and 16th nationally.
• Eli Brooks is second on the team with 12.1 points per game, posting 12 games in double figures. He has had a career-best 13 double figure games in a season on two other occasions, his junior and senior seasons.
• Brooks has started his last 72 games -- basically his last three seasons. During the stretch he has missed two games, one (Wisconsin, Feb. 27, 2020) due to after effects of a broken nose and another (at Minnesota, Jan. 16, 2021) due to a foot injury.
• DeVante' Jones has made 10 of his 14 three-pointers over his last five games.
• Jones has scored in double figures in five of his last six games, hitting a season-best 17, twice -- at Central Florida and at Illinois. During his stretch, he has gone 50 percent from the field (29-for-58).
• Eli Brooks (25), Caleb Houstan (23) and DeVante' Jones (14) have 62 of U-M's 96 three-pointers (64 percent).
• This season, Brooks has gone 27-for-30 (90.0 percent) from the free-throw line. He is 67-for-74 over (90.5 percent) over his last two seasons and for his career, he is shooting 81.3 percent (113-for-139).
• Right behind Eli Brooks from the free-throw line is Caleb Houstan, who is 26-for-34 (76.5 percent).
• DeVante' Jones leads U-M with 55 assists (3.7 apg). He had a season-best eight assists at Nebraska (Dec. 7) and vs. UNLV (Nov. 19) at the Roman Main Event in Las Vegas. He has five games of 5+ assists.
• Eli Brooks is second with 44 assists (2.9 apg) with Hunter Dickinson right behind with 31 (2.2 apg).
• Moussa Diabate, who is second on U-M with 6.1 boards per game, has 11 games with 5+ rebounds -- including each of his last six, which included his first 10+ board game with 13 (Minnesota, Dec. 11).
• Hunter Dickinson (15) and Moussa Diabate (11) have 26 of Michigan's 43 blocks (60.4 percent).
The Indiana Hoosiers
• Indiana hosts Michigan with a 14-4 overall record and a 5-3 Big Ten record. The Hoosiers have won four of their last five games -- including victories over No. 13 Ohio State (W, 67-51; Jan. 6) and No. 4 Purdue (W, 68-65; Jan. 20).
• After the rivalry win over No. 4 Purdue in its last outing, IU remains a perfect 12-0 at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
• The Hoosiers are averaging 74.7 points, 38.8 rebounds and 14.9 assists per game.
• IU is holding opponents to 62.8 points per game and just 37.0 percent shooting, both of which lead the Big Ten. The shooting percentage number ranks second nationally.
• Trayce Jackson-Davis leads the Hoosiers with 18.7 points, 8.6 rebounds and 50 blocks (2.8 bpg) while shooting 60.9 percent from the field, which is second in the Big Ten and 11th nationally. He has 16 double-figure games with seven 20+ games including a career-best 43 against Marshall (11/27/2021), when he was 18-for-24 from the field.
• The Hoosiers have two additional double-figure scorers with Race Thompson's 10.8 points and Pitt transfer Xavier Johnson's 10.0 points-per-game average. Thompson adds 7.6 rebounds and is shooting 56.9 percent from the field. Johnson has a team-best 74 assists (4.1 apg), while grabbing 3.6 rebounds per game. UT-Martin transfer Parker Stewart has made a team-best 35 three-pointers, shooting 45.5 percent from deep, helping to 7.3 points per game.
• Indiana is led by first year head coach Mike Woodson -- an IU Hall of Famer, All-American, Big Ten MVP and Hoosier State native. Woodson brings nine years of NBA head coaching experience (Atlanta Hawks and New York Knicks). He played 11 seasons in the NBA as a player and is the fifth all-time leading scorer in Hoosiers history with 2,061 points.
• Indiana has won 22 Big Ten championships and has made 39 trips to the NCAA Tournament. The Hoosiers have advanced to eight Final Fours and won five national titles (1940, '52, '76, '81, '87). Michigan faced IU in the 1976 national title game.
The Michigan-Indiana Series
• Michigan and Indiana have played 171 games, with U-M trailing 106-65 in the all-time series.
• U-M has a 14-66 record in Bloomington, but the Wolverines have won the last three games at the Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
• There have been 43 games decided by fewer than three points, as U-M trails 27-16 in those games. There have been 18 games decided by one-point, with U-M trailing 12-6. In the last narrow margin game (March 11, 2016), Kam Chatman drained a corner three-pointer in the Big Ten Tournament to give U-M a 72-69 win over No. 1 seed Indiana at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.
• There have been eight overtime games, wth the series split at 4-4. In the last overtime game (Jan. 7, 2009), U-M overcame a 20-point second-half deficit to win 72-66 over Indiana at Assembly Hall.
