Michigan Soars Past Western Michigan for Second Straight Victory

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 17-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team won its second straight match, a 6-1 decision over Western Michigan on Friday (Jan. 21) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Maize and Blue took the doubles point and won five of six singles matches.
Michigan (2-0) started the match with a fight for doubles, with No. 1 and No. 2 battling it out. The No. 43-ranked duo of Andrew Fenty and Nino Ehrenschneider were down 5-4 only to come back and take their set 7-5. At No. 3 doubles, Gavin Young and Patorn Hanchaikul had a steady build up to a 5-3 lead, clinching their match 6-3 off to earn the doubles point for Michigan. Patrick Maloney and Will Cooksey gained a two-game lead at 5-3 before, and the match was tied 6-6 when the match was abandoned.
With the doubles point secured and a great energy in the VTC, the Wolverines flew through four of their singles matches. No. 67 Jacob Bickersteth crushed his first set at No. 3, having a 5-1 lead and finishing it off 6-2. After being down 1-0, Bickersteth won three straight games to make it 3-1 and ended with a 6-4 victory over Fynn Lohse.
At No. 5, Ehrenschneider maintained a steady streak after his first set began 1-1, taking five straight games and the set 6-1. A second after Bickersteth's win, Ehrenschneider closed his match with a 6-3 second set.
No. 43 ranked Young clinched the match for Michigan at No. 4, gaining a lead of 5-2 in his first set and finishing it 6-4, followed by a swift 6-1 second set. Maloney also had a strong performance at No. 2, as he won his first set 6-3. Up 4-1 in his second but down 40-0, Maloney fought back to win the game, making it 5-1 and eventually defeating Anton Arzhankin 6-2.
Fenty and Cooksey took their matches to three sets. After losing his first set 6-4, Fenty swept the second 6-0 to even things at 1 apiece, but fell to Peter Kuszynski 6-4 in the third set. At No. 6, Cooksey had a quick first set, winning 6-3, but Brogan Pierce forced him into a third after taking the second off a tiebreaker. After being down 7-5 in the third-set tiebreaker, Cooksey rallied to win 11-9 and end a great day for the Wolverines against Western Michigan (2-1).
Michigan heads south for the ITA Kick-Off event next Saturday and Sunday (Jan. 28-29) in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Wolverines face Wake Forest on Friday (Jan. 28) at 5 p.m., and will face either Notre Dame or SMU on Saturday (Jan. 29).
