ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sprinters and hurdlers carried the banner for the University of Michigan women's track and field team on Saturday (Jan. 22), combining for four victories on the world-class U-M Indoor Track Building's hydraulically banked 200-meter track to headline the Michigan Invitational.
Ziyah Holman posted a Big Ten-leading performance at 600 meters, capping a series of four victories in the sprints and hurdles events that also included winners Aasia Laurencin (60-meter hurdles), BreeAna Bates (60 meters), Ameia Wilson (200 meters) and Chika Amene (400 meters).
Running the 600-meter distance for the first time since setting the school record nearly a year ago as part of her incendiary 2021 debut campaign, Holman showed no sign of a sophomore slump as she claimed the win in a Big Ten-leading 1:29.26.
Only teammate Savannah Sutherland was within four seconds of her at 1:32.63 in her runner-up finish, as Holman gapped the field in the final lap with a 31.66-second final lap. No other woman ran faster than 33.29 in the final circuit around the track.
Only four other women nationally have run faster, and she checked in just ahead of teammate Aurora Rynda's 1:29.35 from two weekends ago.
Foreshadowed less than an hour earlier by a strong 8.55-second run in the prelims and a career-best-tying 7.79 at 60 meters, Laurencin ran away from the field in the 60-meter hurdles final as she crossed the line in a career-best 8.30 to win by two-tenths of a second. Based on times entering the day, the performance put her in the top-30 nationally and third in the Big Ten in 2022.
In Michigan history, the performance moved her up to No. 6, and it is the fastest time by a Wolverine woman since Cindy Ofili won the 2016 NCAA title in 7.89.
Moments later, Bates extended her collegiate unbeaten streak to five races and three in a row at 60 meters, as she just missed her career best by .02 seconds to take the victory in 7.47. She led four Wolverine women in the 60-meter final and was followed closely by fourth-place Ameia Wilson in 7.57. Wilson doubled back later in the afternoon to notch a win of her own as the took the 200 meters title by thousandths of a second over Michigan State's Shakira Dancy in a college career-best 24.68.
The Wolverines added another sprint victory as Amene chopped more than a half-second off her personal best at 400 meters, coming back on the final lap to clock 57.70 seconds for the win -- the first of her collegiate career.
Though Michigan did not top the podium in any of the field events, there were strong performances across the board.
In her collegiate triple jump debut, Riley Ammenhauser tied Casey Taylor's 16-year-old school record with a 12.46m (40, 10.5 inches) to finish third overall in the competition. Taylor went on to set the school record by the end of her career. Ammenhauser is just beginning her career, and likely will emerge from the weekend ranked top-40 nationally and top-five in the Big Ten. In school history, Ammenhauser ranks fifth.
Ahead of her in the competition was Olympian and American record-holder Tori Franklin, who opened her season with a 13.69m (44 feet, 11 inch) leap that ranks tied for seventh in the world this year, and broke the facility and Michigan soil records in the event.
The Wolverine pole vault crew turned in another strong performance as Brooke Tjerrild came within centimeters of clearing a new school-record 4.27m (14 feet) bar. She settled for a 4.12m (13-6.25) make for the second straight weekend. Teammate Jessica Mercier also made it over 13 feet at 3.97m (13-0.25) for third.
In the shot put, Amanda Schaare and Corinne Jemison were second and third, respectively.
Next Friday and Saturday (Jan. 28-29), Michigan hits the road for the first time this season. The distance runners will travel to the Indiana Relays in Bloomington, Ind., while the sprinters and field-event competitors will head to Lexington, Ky., for the Rod McCravy Memorial.
