COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team had its hands full with No. 9 Ohio State on Friday (Jan. 28), ultimately falling 152.5-147.5 to the Buckeyes in a tight showdown at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.
The teams were tied at 141.5 entering into the final event, and the Buckeyes narrowly came out on top, winning the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:15.41 while the Wolverines touched at 3:15.55.
Freshman Letitia Sim was a bright spot for the Maize and Blue during the meet, winning the 100- (59.82) and 200-yard (2:09.72) breaststroke as well as the 200-yard IM (1:58.63). The Spanish Fort, Ala., native set a personal best with her time in the 100 breast. Senior Olivia Carter added a sweep of the butterfly events for U-M, winning both the 100 (53.06) and 200 (1:55.75).
The Wolverines trailed midway through the meet, but came on strong in the second half thanks to a sweep of the podium in the 200-yard backstroke. Sophomore Casey Chung (1:56.93) led the way, while fellow sophomore Noelle Kaufmann (1:59.37) and Sophia Tuinman (1:59.51) placed second and third. Chung's time meets the NCAA 'B' standard.
Sim picked up the sweep of the breaststroke events in the next race, topping the competition in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:09.72. Two races later, it was Carter who picked up a sweep, besting the field in the 100-yard butterfly in 53.06 seconds. Both times were good for NCAA 'B' cuts.
It was Sim's win in the 200 IM that gave the Wolverines a chance to win in the 400 freestyle relay, but ultimately touched second and third to fall just short of victory.
Senior Maggie MacNeil won the 100-yard backstroke (52.43 seconds), while freshman Lindsay Flynn took first in the 50-yard freestyle (22.73).
Junior Lucy Hogan had a strong showing in the diving well, placing second in both events. The Evanston, Ill., native registered a career-best 316.95 points in the three meter and scored a 278.10 in the one meter.
Michigan's next scheduled event is in two weeks when it hosts the First Chance Meet in Canham Natatorium pn Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 12-13.
