IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan football team jumped out to a first-half lead and held strong, topping Iowa 27-14 in its first road test of the season on Saturday (Oct. 1) at Iowa's Kinnick Stadium.
The Wolverines' top-ranked scoring offense was well-balanced on the afternoon, registering 327 total yards (155 passing, 172 rushing), and dominated the Hawkeyes on the ground allowing just 35 yards. That total also marked the first time U-M has held an opponents under 50 yards on the ground since Wisconsin (Oct. 2, 2021 - 43 yards). It also was the third game this season that the Michigan defense held a team under 100 yards on the ground.
Michigan's 27 points were the most the Hawkeyes' top-ranked defense had allowed this season after entering the contest allowing 5.8 points per game.
Junior Blake Corum was a catalyst for the offense once again, leading Michigan with 133 rushing yards and a touchdown, his 10th of the season. Sophomore J.J. McCarthy threw for 155 yards and a touchdown, completing 18-of-24 passes on the afternoon, while Luke Schoonmaker, Roman Wilson and Donovan Edwards each hauled in four receptions.
Though Iowa (3-2, 1-1 Big Ten) scored two touchdowns, the Wolverines defense came through in the clutch to stop Iowa's fourth-quarter rally. In all, Michigan finished with four sacks and six tackles for loss. Senior Mike Morris led the way with a career-best two sacks and season-high three total tackles.
U-M moved the ball with ease on the game's opening drive, marching 75 yards to open the scoring for the day. Receiver Ronnie Bell took an end-around to the end zone for a 16-yard score, the first rushing touchdown of his career.
Michigan (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) scored on three of its four first-half drives, as kicker Jake Moody drove home field goals of 44 and 35 yards, respectively, to help the Wolverines build a 13-0 halftime advantage.
After the defense started the second half with a three-and-out, Michigan used a heavy dose of Corum to rumble down the field. McCarthy tallied his lone passing touchdown from 12 yards out when he connected with Edwards to cap a 10-play, 67-yard drive.
After three consecutive three-and-outs from the offense, Corum put the game on ice with a 20-yard touchdown with just 1:19 remaining in the contest. The score gave Corum a touchdown in each game of the 2022 campaign.
The win was Michigan's first in Iowa City since its 23-20 overtime victory in the 2005 season.
U-M will remain on the road next weekend when it heads to Bloomington, Ind., to face the Hoosiers (Oct. 1). The game is set for a noon kickoff on Fox.
