WILMINGTON, N.C. -- With an even-par performance from Ashley Lau, the No. 33-ranked University of Michigan women's golf team used a final-round 291 (+3) to tally an 872 54-hole total on Sunday (Oct. 30) to close its fall season in eighth place at the Landfall Tradition played at the Country Club of Landfall.
"It wasn't the way we wanted to finish the fall, but there were some solid performances this week," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "Mikaela (Schulz) being back in the lineup, producing the scores she did after losing her spot was just awesome. Hailey (Borja) had a very nice comeback after a rough start and Ashley (Lau) was back to playing the standard of golf she is used to. We are close.
"And, we are deep. Four different players led our team this fall and we had over 20 individual rounds of par or better. We have the talent, depth and competitiveness to go toe- to-toe with anyone. We just need to take care of the simple stuff inside 100 yards. That was what prevented us from a really solid fall. There were some great rounds, but we never put three together in one weekend. We want to compete against the best and that is our standard."
With a 70 (-2) from junior Monet Chun, a 71 (-1) from senior Mikaela Schulz and the first of three straight 72s (E) from Lau, the Maize and Blue opened with a 286 (-2) -- its third team sub-par tally of the fall. Michigan followed with a 295 in the second round paced by Lau's 72 and Schulz's 73.
Highlighted by a hole-in-one (par 3, 13th), Hailey Borja recorded her event-best tally with a 70 (-2) -- her fourth sub-par round of the fall. With a third 72 from Lau and another 73 from Schulz, U-M closed with a 291 (+1) to post an 872.
With her season-best 216 (72-72-72), Lau recorded her second top-25 finish of the fall and led the Wolverines tying for 25th. A stroke behind her was Schulz, whose 217 (+ 1) put her in a tie for 31st. Chun's tie for 45th (70-76-76/222) and Borja's tie for 49th (79-74-70) helped Michigan put four starters among the top 50 for the second straight tournament.
The Wolverines have completed their five-event fall schedule and now head into the program's training break. U-M will return to competition in February when they head to Virginia's hosting of the College Invitational at the Guadalajara Country Club in Mexico.
