KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team went 2-2 on Saturday (Nov. 19) on the final day of the Tennessee Invitational at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center. The Wolverines defeated North Carolina 235-144 and Carson-Newman 188-105 while falling to No. 8 Virginia 192.5-183.5 and host No. 10 Tennessee 269-120.
Gal Groumi swam his way to a first-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly, dropping 3.14 seconds off his prelim time to finish in 1:41.40 and set a new meet record. Tyler Ray finished 10th with a time of 1:47.97 and Connor Hunt finished 12th (1:48.39).
Jared Daigle and Hunt kicked off the final day in Knoxville in the 1,650-yard freestyle and finished third (15:08.67) and sixth (15:16.56), respectively. Eduardo Moraes, Ryan Hume and Jack Callan swam their way to a 10th, 12th and 13th-place finish, respectively, to grab big points for the Wolverines.
In the 200-yard backstroke, Eitan Ben-Shitrit was the fastest Wolverine, finishing fourth in 1:43.90) with Jacque Wenger (1:45.01) finishing fifth and Daigle (1:46.60) touching the wall eighth. Michigan only advanced two Wolverines in the 100-yard freestyle in Bence Szabados and Nikola Acin. Szabados finished seventh, touching the wall in 43.69 seconds, narrowly beating out Acin, who finished eighth in 43.71.
In the 200-yard breaststroke, Ansel Froass, Cameron Luarde and Jack McCurdy, finished sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively. Brendan Fitzpatrick collected some big points for the Wolverines with a 10th-place finish with a time of 1:59.01.
In Saturday's final event, the 400 free relay, the quartet of Groumi, Szabados, Acin and Ben-Shitrit finished third in 2:52.16.
The Wolverines will next be in action on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 10 a.m. when they face Indiana in a dual meet at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center in Bloomington.
