COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team controlled from start to finish to earn a decisive 3-0 win over No. 9 Iowa in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals on Thursday morning (Nov. 3) at Ohio State's Buckeye Varsity Field. It was U-M's third shutout win over the Hawkeyes in four weeks and its eighth shutout win of the season.
With the victory, Michigan (12-5) advances to face top-seeded -- and third-ranked -- Penn State in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals on Friday (Nov. 4) at 1:30 p.m.
The Wolverines earned shutouts in all three wins over Iowa (11-7), while today's result was the most lopsided in the series. Michigan outshot the Hawkeyes 16-3, including 7-0 on goal, and outcornered them 6-1.
Michigan scored in each of the opening three quarters. Junior Erin Reilly broke through at the 9:49 mark with her third goal of the season. Fifth-year senior Katie Anderson, who earned a pair of assists on the day, carried the ball to the right baseline and fed a pass to the middle, where Reilly one-timed a shot in from the back post.
Fifth-year senior Tina D'Anjolell doubled up the Wolverine lead midway through the second quarter, at 22:11, with a slick goal from the right post. Senior Nina Apoola whipped a pass from left-to-right across the circle, it hit an Iowa defender and bounced behind her, and D'Anjolell chased it down, spun and banged it into the nearside corner. It was her fourth goal of the season.
Michigan's third goal came off a penalty-corner give-and-go late in the third quarter, at 43:14. Junior Kate McLaughlin inserted the ball; it went from junior Pilar Oliveros to Anderson on the arc and back to McLaughlin, who pushed it between the Hawkeye goalkeeper's legs for her fifth goal this season.
Fifth-year senior goalkeeper Anna Spieker earned the shutout -- her fourth complete-game effort this season -- but did not face a shot on goal. Iowa goalie Mia Magnotta stopped three of six U-M shots on goal.
