
Michigan Cruises Past Purdue in First Big Ten Matchup of Season

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team defeated Purdue 178.5-101.5 on Friday (Nov. 4) in Canham Natatorium in both teams' Big Ten-opening meet.
The quartet of Wyatt Davis, Brendan Fitzpatrick, Gal Groumi and Bence Szabados kicked off the meet touching the wall first in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:27.05.
Eduardo Moraes swam his way to victory in the 1,000-yard freestyle by 15 seconds, finishing in a time of 9:17.59. Yugo Tsukikawa finished second and Ryan Hume (9:32.69) touched the wall in third as Michigan (2-0, 1-0 Big Ten) picking up the first sweep of the meet.
Following the sweeping trend, Szabados, Cam Peel and Nikola Acin went one-two-three in the 50 free.
Davis picked up his first individual race win of the meet in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 47.35 seconds, while Nadav Aaronson tied for third with a time of 49.97. Jared Daigle was the fastest Wolverine in the 200-yard backstroke, finishing first in a time of 1:46.78.
Ansel Froass and Jack McCurdy touched the wall first and third, respectively, in the 200-yard breaststroke to pick up some big points for Michigan. In the 500 free, Moraes touched first and Ozan Kalafat finished second with a time of 4:28.06 and 4:32.75, respectively.
Davis picked up his third first-place finish of the night in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 47.36 seconds, and Szabados touched second in 48.11.
In the final individual event of the night, Daigle, Eitan Ben-Shitrit and Logan Zucker swept the 400-yard individual medley. Daigle touched first with a time of 3:52.33, Ben-Shitrit (3:58.26) touched second and Zucker (4:00.36) finished third.
On the diving side, Cameron Gammage finished first on the 1-meter springboard with a score of 349.80 and Kameron Lieberman (265.20) finished third.
To cap off the evening, the team of Szabados, Acin, Groumi and Peel finished first in the 400 free relay, finishing in a time of 2:55.73.
In the 3-meter springboard competition, Gammage scored 331.50 points to finish second, while Lieberman (300.80) finished fourth.
Other top three finishers included Ben-Shitrit and Groumi in the 200 free, Fitzpatrick in the 100 breast, Morici in the 200 fly and Acin and Groumi in the 100 free.
The Wolverines will return to the pool Saturday (Nov. 5) at 11 a.m., when they face off against No. 24 Northwestern at Canham Natatorium. The meet will be streamed live on B1G+.
