ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 16-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team defeated the No. 24-ranked Northwestern Wildcats 204-95 on Saturday (Nov. 5) in Canham Natatorium, claiming victories in 14 of the day's 16 events.
The quartet of Wyatt Davis, Brendan Fitzpatrick, Gal Groumi and Bence Szabados started off the meet with a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:26.66.
Jared Daigle kicked off the individual events for the Wolverines with a blistering 9:12.10 in the 1,000-yard freestyle to finish first, while teammate Ryan Hume touched third with a time of 9:34.11.
Newcomer Eduardo Moraes was in control from start to finish in the 200-yard freestyle, touching first at 1:37.91. Eitan Ben-Shitrit was right behind, finishing second with a time of 1:38.88.
Davis pulled off a one-second victory in the 100-yard backstroke, touching first in a time of 46.91, while Nikola Acin finished second with a time of 48.13.
Szabados, Cam Peel and Andrew Trepanier completed the first sweep of the meet in the 50 free, going one, two and three. Szabados and Peel were the only two swimmers to finish in under 20 seconds, coming in at 19.76 and 19.96, respectively.
Davis picked up his third first-place finish of the day in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:45.60 and Daigle finished third in a time of 1:46.15.
Ansel Froass swam his way to his first individual win on the day in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:00.74) and Jack McCurdy finished third.
Moraes earned his second victory of the day in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:28.32 and Logan Zucker finished third with a time of 4:36.55.
Davis, Groumi and Trepanier swept the top three finishes in the 100-yard butterfly, which helped earn big points for the Wolverines against Northwestern.
Daigle and Ben-Shitrit went one and two in the 200 IM, finishing in 1:48.21 and 1:48.63, respectively.
In the last event of the day, the team of Szabados, Peel, Acin and Groumi touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:19.30.
On the diving side, Cameron Gammage took control of the 1-meter springboard competition, winning by 74 points. Kameron Liberman finished third with a score of 259.13. Gammage picked up his second win on the day with 319.43 points on the 3-meter springboard.
Other top three finishers included Froass and McCurdy in the 100-yard breaststroke, Groumi in the 200-yard butterfly and Szabados and Acin in the 100-yard freestyle.
The Wolverines will return to the pool on Thursday (Nov. 17) in Knoxville, Tenn. at the Tennessee Invitational. The event is set for 10 a.m. at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.
