PONTIAC, Mich. -- The No. 23-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team scored a program record goal total in its dominating 23-2 victory over Detroit Mercy on Friday night (Feb. 11) at the UWM Complex.
U-M's 23 goals are the most in program history, breaking the 22 goals it scored in 2015 against Saint Mary's (California).
The Wolverines (1-0) had 15 different goal scorers with eight players scoring two goals each. Sophomore Caroline Davis and freshman Kaylee Dyer led the U-M offense with three points each (two goals, one assist), while Michigan had six different players dole out an assist against Detroit Mercy (0-1). In all, U-M had six players record their first career points on the nights, as the Wolverines played all available players in the victory.
Michigan also dominated the draw control 21-7, with 10 wins in the first quarter alone. The U-M draw was led by Erin Garvey, who had four, while Josie Gooch and Julia Schwabe each had three draw control wins.
Defensively, freshman Haley Polk and junior Caitlyn Camelio had a team-best two caused turnovers, and U-M picked up 16 ground balls. In the cage, Arielle Weissman got the start and played the entire first half before the Wolverines split up the second half between Erin O'Grady, Mariah Sweeney and Maya Santa-Maria. Weissman made three saves on the evening, while Sweeney made one.
Michigan dominated off the first draw control, scoring nine straight goals, including two each from Davis, Dyer and Garvey, before Detroit Mercy had its first shot attempt of the evening.
The Wolverines continued to press, scoring four more goals to take a 13-0 advantage before the Titans put one on the board. The Maize and Blue added one final tally in the first half to take a 14-1 lead into the halftime break.
Davis and Dyer led Michigan with three points each, while Garvey, Kaitlyn Mead, and Annabelle Burke all scored two goals in the first half of action. U-M dominated the draw control 12-4 and had eight caused turnovers in the first 30 minutes of play.
Claire Galvin tacked on two goals in the third quarter, as U-M outscored the Titans 4-0 and headed into the final quarter of action with an 18-1 lead.
Twenty seconds into the fourth quarter, Meryl Johnson netted her first goal of the night before freshman Jill Smith scored back-to-back goals put the Wolverines up 21-1. The Titans found one final goal, but Michigan would answer with two more goals to close out the season opener.
The Wolverines will cap off their season-opening with a trip to South Bend, Ind., for a Sunday (Feb. 13) matchup with No. 5 Notre Dame. The game starts at 6 p.m. and it will be broadcast live on ACC Network.
