
Michigan Takes Down No. 5 Notre Dame for First-Ever Top-Five Win

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The No. 23-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team downed No. 5 Notre Dame 11-7 on Sunday evening (Feb. 13) at the Loftus Sports Center.
The win over a top-five-ranked program marks the first in the history of the program.
Michigan (2-0) totaled 25 shots in the win, while goalie Arielle Weissman made 13 saves as Notre Dame was just 2-for-9 on free-position shots.
Senior Kaitlyn Mead led U-M with four goals on seven shots, while Erin Garvey recorded her first hat trick of the season with three goals on five shots. Freshman Kaylee Dyer and senior Kaley Thompson added a pair of goals each, and Caitlin Muir handed out three assists.
On the draw control, Kaitlyn Mead had three wins and Hailey Mead had two wins in the circle.
Defensively, Weissman picked up seven ground balls, while Muir had three and Dyer scooped up two. U-M had eight caused turnovers in the victory.
Mead put the Wolverines on the scoreboard early as she scored less than 20 seconds into the game. Notre Dame (1-1) and Kaitlyn Mead exchanged goals as she recorded her hat trick in the first quarter to put Michigan up 3-2 with 3:33 remaining the opening stanza.
Dyer scored back-to-back goals to start the second quarter to ignite a 4-0 Michigan run and extended the Wolverine lead to 8-3 with 7:05 left in the first half. The Fighting Irish tacked on one final goal to close out the first half with U-M leading 8-4.
Coming out of the halftime break, Garvey fired in her second goal of the day. Notre Dame tried to close the gap with two straight goals, but Kaitlyn Mead opened the fourth quarter with her fourth goal of the night, and Garvey completed her hat trick to push Michigan to an 11-6 advantage with 9:50 left in the contest.
Weissman and the defense shut down the powerful Notre Dame attack in the closing minutes, making two saves and not allowing a shot in the final two minutes of play to secure the road victory.
U-M will be back in action Friday (Feb. 18) when it takes on Arizona State at 4 p.m. at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
