MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team opened the Big Ten Championships on Wednesday (Feb. 16) with a pair of podium finishes to sit in in second place after the first day of the Big Ten Championships at the Soderholm Family Aquatic Center.
The Wolverines finished the day with 110 points. Ohio State leads with 128 points.
The night began with the 200-yard medley relay. Senior Maggie MacNeil got the Wolverines out to an early lead with an impressive 23.48 split, the fastest time in the Big Ten this season in the 50 backstroke. Next up was freshman Letitia Sim who swam a 26.75 in the breaststroke. Senior Olivia Carter followed with a solid 23.06 in the butterfly leg. Heading into the anchor leg, Michigan trailed Ohio State by just over one second when freshman Lindsay Flynn entered the pool. She made up a few tenths on the Buckeyes by swimming a Big Ten leading 21.40 in the 50 freestyle, but it was not enough to catch the Buckeyes and finished second.
The second -- and final -- event of the night was the 800-yard freestyle relay. Junior Megan Glass kicked things off 1:44.87, a top-four time in the Big Ten entering the night. Next up, sophomore Kathryn Ackerman who swam a 1:45.15. Going into the third leg, the Wolverines were fourth in their heat, but senior Victoria Kwan posted a 1:44.85 to put U-M into third heading into the final 200. Carter touched the wall in 1:43.95, securing a third-place U-M finish. The quartet missed out on a second-place finish by 0.22 seconds and finished 0.65 behind first-place Ohio State.
Both Michigan relay times were good enough to collect NCAA 'A' cuts.
The Big Ten Championships will resume Thursday (Feb. 17) with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. CST and finals starting at 6:30 p.m. CST. Diving preliminaries will begin at noon CST.
