A trio of Wolverine juniors in Paul Juda, Crew Bold, and David Willett will trek to the USA Gymnastics sanctioned Winter Cup Challenge (Feb. 25-27) at the Ford Center in Frisco, Texas. On the line are selections for the United States National team.
The Winter Cup Challenge
• Senior and defending Winter Cup All-Around champion Cameron Bock will not compete in the meet due to injury. However, the current USA Gymnastics National Team member will petition the USAG Board for inclusion on the team.
• The meet will be the third for junior Paul Juda. Junior Crew Bold's trip will be his second, while the event will be the first for junior David Willett.
• Last season, Bock won the all-around title at the event with a score of 84.150, becoming the first gymnast with Wolverine ties since Sam Mikulak to win the honor (2020). Juda took sixth (79.850). Bock scored in the top-five on five events, highlighted by a pair of second-place finishes on pommel horse (14.300) and parallel bars (14.150) as well as third-place efforts on still rings (14.100) and vault (14.350). He also added a fifth-place finish on the high bar (13.400) and the eighth on floor exercise (13.850).
• Bold, representing Minnesota at the 2021 Winter Cup, took fourth on high bar in his first senior-level event. He turned in a 13.45 and 13.55 on the event for a two-day total of 27.000.
• The first day of competition will consist of one session for the senior division. The finals session will feature the top 28 senior athletes out of 48. The senior athletes will advance to the second day according to the Men's Program Committee's points-ranking system. For the senior division, all-around ranking will be determined on the first day of competition, and individual event champions will be determined via a combined two-day score.
• Senior men will lead off Winter Cup competition Friday, February 25 at 7:30 p.m. ET with the men's senior all-around title at stake. Apparatus champions will be crowned Sunday, February 27 at 6:30 p.m. ET based on combined two-day scores. The top-five senior all-around finishers on Day 1 of competition will earn automatic selection to the U.S. Men's National Team. The full team, including a decision on Bock's petition, will be announced in the days following Winter Cup.
