
U-M Stays Undefeated with Road Win at Towson

TOWSON, Md. -- With a defense that gave up just three goals in the final 45 minutes of play, the No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women 's lacrosse team remained undefeated with an 18-6 road victory over Towson Sunday (Feb. 27) at Tiger Field.
The Wolverines (5-0) outshot the Tigers (0-3), 35-24, with 25 shots testing the Towson goalie. U-M also won the draw control battle, 18-10, and the defense gave up just three goals in the final 45 minutes of action. On the draw, Kaitlyn Mead won a team-high five draw controls, while Hailey Mead and Josie Gooch each had four draw control wins for the Wolverines.
Senior goalie Arielle Weissman earned her fifth win of the season, playing all 60 minutes with 10 saves, while Maddie Burns had a team-best three caused turnovers and three ground balls on the defensive end of the ball.
Offensively, Kaley Thompson led the Maize and Blue with four goals, while Kaitlyn Mead added a hat trick and Annabelle Burke, Caitlin Muir and Julia Schwabe all scored a pair of goals. In total, 10 Wolverines found the back of the cage and 11 had at least one point as Ava Class had a team-best two assists.
The Tigers were the first to light up the scoreboard, scoring the first two goals of the game before the Wolverines responded with two goals of their own to tie the game with eight minutes remaining in the first quarter. The two teams each exchanged another goal, but it was Michigan that would take the slight lead, 4-3, after 15 complete minutes of play.
U-M outscored Towson 8-1 in the second quarter, including going on a five-goal run to take a 12-5 lead into the halftime break. Kaitlyn Mead led the Wolverines with three goals, while Muir and Thompson each added a pair in the first half of action. U-M won the draw control 11-8 in the first 30 minutes and Weissman made five saves in the cage.
Thompson started off the third quarter for the Maize and Blue with back-to-back goals before Towson added one back. The Wolverines scored two final goals in the third quarter to take a 16-6 running clock lead into the final 15 minutes of action.
Michigan netted two final goals in the final 15 minutes of the game to earn the decisive victory and remain undefeated to start the 2022 campaign.
U-M will continue its road trip as it takes on High Point Wednesday, March 2, at the US Lacrosse Facility in Sparks, Md., at 1 p.m.
