
No. 8 Michigan Remains Undefeated with Neutral-Site Rout of High Point

SPARKS, Md. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team improved to 6-0 on the season by defeating High Point 15-6 Wednesday afternoon (March 2) at USA Lacrosse Facility.
The Wolverines (6-0) dominated offensively, outshooting the Panthers 32-21 and putting 21 shots on goal compared to their 11. Fifth-year senior Caitlin Muir had a team-high six points with four goals and two assists, while senior Kaley Thompson recorded her second straight hat trick.
Senior Erin Garvey along with sophomores Caroline Bean and Annabelle Burke each added two goals to the Michigan tally, while nine Wolverines in total recorded at least one point in the win.
Senior Kaitlyn Mead and sophomore Josie Gooch combined for 10 draw-control wins with five apiece as Michigan won the draw-control battle 17-8.
Graduate student Arielle Weissman earned her sixth win of the season in the cage, playing all 60 minutes and recording five saves, while senior Morgan Whitaker and graduate student Katherine Galzerano combined for five ground balls with three and two, respectively, and each had one caused turnover on the defensive end of the field.
Michigan took control early, scoring the first three goals of the game in the opening four minutes. High Point (0-4) got one back, but Muir closed out the first quarter with a free-position goal to send the Wolverines into the second quarter with a 4-1 advantage.
U-M started the second quarter with a pair of goals, capped off with a strike from Burke off a pass from Kaylee Dyer, to extend the Michigan lead to 6-1 with 9:38 left in the opening half. The Panthers found their second goal of the contest with just under seven minutes left, but Gooch won the draw and Dyer scored a goal less than 30 seconds later to give Michigan the 7-2 lead at the halftime break.
Thompson led Michigan in the first half with two goals, while Weissman made three saves in the cage.
Gooch won the draw to start the third quarter, and the Wolverines scored on their first offensive possession as Muir netted her third goal of the day off a pass from Ava Class. With less than three minutes to go in the third stanza, Bean and Thompson each added a goal to allow Michigan to take a 10-4 lead into the final 15 minutes of play.
The Wolverines opened the fourth quarter on a 4-0 burst to start a running clock with 6:48 left in the contest. High Point notched a goal with less than four minutes to play, but Michigan once again had a quick response as Muir fired her fourth goal of the day into the back of the cage to keep the clock running with 2:48 remaining.
The Panthers managed to score one final goal in the closing 30 seconds before Michigan won the draw control and went on to the 15-6 victory.
The Wolverines will continue action Sunday (March 6) when they make the short in-state trip to Mount Pleasant, Mich., for a 1 p.m. contest against Central Michigan.
