CARYVILLE, Tenn. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan rowing program began its spring season in Tennessee on Sunday and Monday (Feb. 27-28), rowing against the University of Louisville at Norris Lake. The team is staying in Caryville during its spring training trip, and the Wolverines found competition nearby against the Cardinals over the course of two days.
Official results were not kept; the Maize and Blue competed four eight boats during Monday competition after rowing in pairs on Sunday.
The first day of competition for the varsity lineup was made up of two 2,000-meter pieces (2x2k) in a time-trial format.
During today's races, U-M put out four eights against Louisville's two. The Wolverine novice program also competed. Boats made their way through a 20k workout together, rowing short, low-intensity intervals at two minutes on, one minute off.
Head coach Mark Rothstein was glad to see the Wolverines show well against outside competition.
"The past two days have been a good exercise for our team," said Rothstein. "It always raises the intensity of things to line up against another program, and I thought our team competed really well."
U-M will continue to train in Caryville for the week and will race again on Friday (March 4) against No. 18-ranked Tennessee before returning home. The event was originally scheduled for Saturday (March 5).
