JOHN'S ISLAND, S.C. -- Paced with a runner-up finish from senior Ashley Lau, the 11th-ranked University of Michigan women's golf team tallied an even-par 864 team total today (Tuesday, March 15) to finish as the runner-up at the College of Charleston's Briar's Creek Invitational played at the Golf Club at Briar's Creek.
U-M's runner-up trophy gives the Wolverines three straight top two team finishes in the three spring events. It also marked the Maize and Blue's fifth top-three finish in seven total events. Michigan opened its spring as the runner-up at the Tulane Classic before tying for first with host Florida at the 50th VyStar Gators Invitational.
Mirroring the team's success, Lau followed the Wolverines' success as she recorded her third straight top two individual finish as well. With her 212 (-4), she rallied and tied as the runner-up. In her previous two events, she tied for medalist honors at the Tulane Classic before winning the VyStar Gators Invite.
"Over my last three events, I have just tried to stick to the one shot at a time mentality and really focus on my targets," said Lau. "It got so windy out here I literally took it one shot at a time. I guess I'm really trusting myself when I'm over the shot has been helping. But, I am glad to just help the team succeed."
From the get-go, the Wolverines were chasing Campbell from the start after the Camels opened with a 281 (-7), three shots ahead of U-M's 284 (-4). Heading straight into the second round, the Wolverines kept pace with Campbell; however, U-M trailed by seven when play was called for the day due to darkness. Returning for today's final round, a 70 (-2) from Lau and junior Hailey Borja gave the Wolverines a closing 287. With an even-par 864, the Wolverines closed 11 shots back of champion Campbell (281-288-284/853, -11).
With her opening 68 (-4), Lau took the early lead on the 96-golfer field before her 74 in the second round dropped her into a tie for fourth. Once again rallying in her final round she used a closing 70 (-2) to move up two positions and tie for the runner-up at 212 (-4), just a shot back of medalist Natalie Irlbacher of Boston College (74-65-72/211, 5).
Along with Lau's runner-up finish, junior Anika Dy tied for 13th with a season-low 218 (73-73-72) while sophomore Monet Chun tied for 15th at 219 (71-73-75. Borja used her closing 70 (-2) to rebound from a second-round 80 to tie for 27th at 222 (72-80-70). Graduate student Ashley Kim rounded out U-M's starting five as she tied for 48th (76-73-78/227).
The Wolverines head west for their next tournament in less than two weeks as they will play in the PING/ASU Invitational, Friday through Sunday, March 25-27. The three-day, 54-hole event will be played at the Papago Golf Course in Tempe, Arizona.
