ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Heralding the impending arrival of spring, the University of Michigan men's track and field team will head outside for the first time in 2022 as it kicks off the outdoor season this Friday and Saturday (March 18-19) at the Black and Gold Invitational hosted by UCF.
Most of the Wolverines' sprinters, jumpers and throwers will be in action in Orlando against teams from around the country. Among the three-dozen schools expected to compete against Michigan are conference foes Rutgers and Minnesota, and Power Five opponents Kentucky, NC State and Vanderbilt.
Michigan's distance runners are expected to debut next weekend at the Raleigh Relays in North Carolina (March 24-26).
Friday is the longer of the two days of competition, with field events likely beginning for the men around 1 p.m. and lasting into the evening hours. Action on the track starts at 5:45 p.m. for the men, and will conclude for Michigan by 7:10 p.m.
Saturday's session gets underway around noon for the men, with both the hammer throw and track events expected to begin shortly after 12 p.m. All events are tentatively scheduled to end around 3:45 p.m.
Delays may also be possible with seasonal pop-up thunderstorms expected to roll through the area in the early afternoon hours on both Friday and Saturday.
Newly minted All-Americans Dubem Amene and Joshua Zeller headline the crew, fresh off their performances at the NCAA Indoor Championships last weekend. Both men will be on relay duty, and will open up their individual campaigns in the coming weeks.
Also among those expected to compete are individual Big Ten Indoor Championships scorers Mason Mahacek (100 meters, discus and javelin), Bera Ajala (100 meters, long jump) and Cassidy Henshaw (long jump).
Live results will be provided through Half-Mile Timing, and updates will be posted throughout the competition to the official social media channels of Michigan track and field.
