ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With spring just days away, the University of Michigan women's track and field team will kick off its 2022 outdoor season this Friday and Saturday (March 18-19) as it heads outside for the Black and Gold Invitational hosted by UCF.
Most of the Wolverines' sprinters, jumpers and throwers will be in action in Orlando against teams from around the country. Among the three-dozen schools expected to compete against Michigan are conference foes Rutgers and Minnesota, and Power Five opponents Kentucky, N.C. State and Vanderbilt.
Michigan's distance runners are expected to debut in two weekends' time at Stanford (April 1-2).
Friday is the longer of the two days of competition, with field events set to begin around 11 a.m. and lasting into the early evening hours. Action on the track for Michigan starts at 6 p.m., and will conclude for the Wolverines by 6:40 p.m.
Saturday's session gets underway at 10 a.m. for the women, with track events expected to begin around noon. All events are tentatively scheduled to end around 3:30 p.m.
Delays may also be possible with seasonal pop-up thunderstorms expected to roll through the area in the early afternoon hours on both Friday and Saturday.
Four-time Big Ten champion Ziyah Holman (200 meters) headlines the crew suiting up Michigan's 2022 outdoor debut, along with Big Ten silver medalists Aasia Laurencin (200 meters, 100-meter hurdles) and Ameia Wilson (100 meters, 200 meters, long jump).
The lineup will also include Mia Manson, Brooke Tjerrild and Cate Visscher from the highly ranked pole vault crew, as well as 2022 standouts Riley Ammenhauser (long jump, triple jump), BreeAna Bates (100 meters), Theresa Mayanja (200 meters, 100-meter hurdles, high jump, javelin), Amanda Schaare (shot put, discus), Savannah Sutherland (200 meters, 100-meter hurdles) and Hannah Waller (100 meters, long jump).
