ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team connected for three home runs Friday (March 18) as the Wolverines clinched a series victory with an emphatic 18-6 win against the Dayton Flyers at the Wilpon Complex's Ray Fisher Stadium.
Michigan sent 11 batters to the plate in a six-run first inning punctuated by a Ted Burton grand slam and a Clark Elliott two-run single as the Wolverines got into Dayton's bullpen early.
Jimmy Obertop added a long solo homer in the second for a 7-0 lead before Dayton scored single runs in the third and fourth innings against U-M starter Noah Rennard (2-0).
Michigan added two runs in the fifth on the strength of a long RBI double from Elliott to make it a 9-2 game.
It was Burton again in the sixth inning as the junior launched a 419-foot, two-run homer to left-center before Jake Marti laced an RBI single to make it a 12-2 game and remove any doubt from the outcome. Burton finished his day 4-for-6 with a double, two homers and eight runs batted in, and he was robbed of another extra-base hit by the Dayton defense.
Riley Bertram also added four hits, while Joe Stewart and Dylan Stanton enjoyed three-hit days -- the first of his career for Stanton.
Rennard was impressive in his 6.0 innings of work. The righty mixed a variety of speeds and picked up eight strikeouts against six hits to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Willie Weiss and Ahmad Harajli threw scoreless innings, with Weiss picking up two strikeouts and Harajli striking out the side in the eighth. Ryan Zimmer worked the ninth and struck out the final batter to pick up his first career strikeout.
With inclement weather in the region, the teams will not play on Saturday and instead finish the series on Sunday in a 1 p.m. start. Follow updates on MGoBlue.com and on Twitter at @UMichBaseball.
