ORLANDO, Fla. -- The sun was shining Saturday (March 19) at Central Florida for the Black and Gold Invitational after an opening day marred by weather delays, and so too were first-year collegian BreeAna Bates and her University of Michigan women's track and field sprints crew.
Bates clocked a new U-M first-year-record 11.54 (+0.8m/s) to finish eighth overall in the 100 meters final and combined with Hanna Hearn, Ameia Wilson and Hannah Waller to come within a tenth of a second of the school record in the 4x100 relay.
Bates' performance eclipsed the previous best time run by a U-M first-year collegian, which had stood at a wind-aided 11.56 by Maria Brown in 1997.
For record-keeping purposes at the international level, marks in the horizontal jumps and races on the track less than one lap are considered "wind legal" if the trailing wind behind the athlete is 2.0 meters per second (m/s) or less.
She moved to No. 5 on the all-conditions U-M all-time list and put herself in position to be among the top 48 in the NCAA East Region to advance to the NCAA Preliminaries in May.
Bates' individual performance came after she ran a leg of Michigan's 4x100 relay, which clocked 45.11 to take second overall. The time puts the Wolverines on the bubble of qualifying for the NCAA East Prelims and was within 0.1 of a second of the 45.01 school record that has stood since 1998.
Indoor Big Ten silver medalist hurdler Aasia Laurencin was also strong in her outdoor 100-meter hurdles debut as a Wolverine, finishing fourth overall with a wind-aided 13.53 (+3.5m/s). The wind is allowable for NCAA Prelims qualifying purposes, and the time positions her well to ultimately qualify for the meet.
