
No. 8 Michigan Defeats Central Michigan to End Road Stint

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan women's lacrosse team notched a 17-13 victory at Central Michigan Sunday afternoon (March 6) to remain perfect to start the 2022 season.
The Wolverines (7-0) held off a late CMU (3-3) attack to earn its seventh victory of the 2022 season behind four goals from senior Kaitlyn Mead. Seniors Erin Garvey and Kaley Thompson along with sophomore Caroline Bean all added a pair of goals in the U-M attack and 11 players in all scored a goal for the Maize and Blue.
Defensively, Michigan forced Central Michigan into 19 turnovers as Annabelle Burke and Garvey had three caused turnovers apiece and Katherine Galzerano had two.
U-M used all four of its goalies in the win with Arielle Weissman being the keeper of record for her seventh win as she made six saves.
The Wolverines got to work early and often to start the contest against the Chippewas as they scored off the first draw before going on a 5-0 run with two goals from Mead to close out the first 15 minutes of play with a 6-1 advantage.
Michigan once again scored off the opening draw of the quarter and Mead made it 8-2 as she ripped in a free position goal to record her third goal of the game. Following Mead's goal, U-M added three more tallies before CMU closed out the half on a three-goal run. Despite the short run from the Chippewas, Michigan would take an 11-5 lead into the halftime break.
U-M outshot Central Michigan 21-14 in the first 30 minutes of play and forced CMU into 10 turnovers with Garvey and Galzerano each having two caused turnovers. Mead was the only multi-goal scorer in the first half with three goals, while eight other Wolverines found the back of the cage in the first 30 minutes.
The Wolverines built their advantage to nine in the third quarter as Mead scored her fourth goal of the day and both Thompson and Garvey added their second to take a 16-7 lead with just 15 minutes to play.
CMU put together a five-goal run in the final quarter of action to come within four, 16-12, with 5:36 remaining in the game. Michigan ended the Central Michigan run when Garvey found Julia Schwabe for a goal with 2:31 left to play.
The Chippewas called a timeout with just under two minutes on the clock and scored four seconds into the resumption of play, but the Wolverine defense held off the late CMU attack to earn a 17-13 road victory.
Michigan will play at U-M Lacrosse Stadium for the first time in 2022 Sunday (March 13) when it welcomes No. 12 Denver at 1 p.m.
