Wolverines and Hoosiers Go Head-to-Head in Scrimmage at Belleville Lake

Belleville, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan rowing program hosted Indiana University for a scrimmage on Friday (March 25) at Belleville Lake. The teams raced in 2,000-meter pieces with two varsity eights and two novice eights, each. U-M also brought three fours to Indiana's two.
Results were unofficial and times were not recorded, but head coach Mark Rothstein was happy with his team's effort and resolve after they were forced to adapt late in the week to an altered schedule.
"Our team adjusted well to a fast-changing race plan," said Rothstein. "I was glad to see them embrace the changes and stay focused on putting their best effort forth once we got on the water."
"We appreciate Indiana's flexibility in making today's races happen."
Races were originally scheduled for Saturday (March 26) but with bad weather on the way, both programs decided to move races up a day and compete in an informal workout Friday instead. Boats completed 2K pieces through a 15-to-20-plus mile-per-hour crosswind with frequent gusts.
Overall, the day provided a valuable opportunity for competition. For first-year athletes, this was their first competition at home, and an important icebreaker of sorts, and a good way to break in against Big Ten competition with more conference foes on the schedule for next weekend.
Up next, U-M will travel to Columbus, Ohio to compete in the B1G-ACC Challenge on Saturday (April 2). A number of schools from each conference are expected to attend, and the Wolverines are scheduled to race against the University of Virginia and Duke University.
