LINCOLN, Neb. -- Jimmy Obertop's two-out, two-run double in the top of the ninth inning lifted the University of Michigan baseball team past Nebraska Saturday (March 26) by a score of 8-6 in a high-level Big Ten Conference game at Haymarket Park.
The teams will complete their series Sunday (March 27) with an 11 a.m. CDT game time on Big Ten Network.
After Nebraska rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to tie the game, Michigan answered with a two-out rally in the ninth, punctuated by the junior catcher, who turned around a 93 mph fastball on an 0-2 count to produce the winning runs.
Armed with an 8-6 lead, sophomore reliever Chase Allen provided a 1-2-3 ninth inning with two strikeouts to completed a three-inning relief stint with five whiffs to earn his third win of the season.
Jordon Rogers gave Michigan a second-inning lead when he lofted a two-out, two-run double off the wall in right-center.
Nebraska used two-out rallies in the third and fourth innings to tie the game against Michigan starter Cameron Weston, but the righty was tough against the Big Ten preseason favorites.
As it did Friday night, Michigan displayed its offensive power in the sixth inning to chase Nebraska ace Shay Shanaman from the game. Matt Frey led off the frame by crushing an 0-2 fastball 421 feet down the right-field line to claim a 3-2 lead. Then, following a walk and an excellent defensive play from NU to get an out, Tito Flores sent a two-run bomb over the center-field wall to silence the crowd with a 5-2 lead and get into Nebraska's bullpen.
Nebraska scratched for a run in the bottom of the frame, but Michigan got that one back in the top of the seventh as Frey laced an RBI single to left field to score Clark Elliott, who had walked with one out and stole second moments before Frey's hit.
Nebraska again answered in the bottom of the eighth, tying the game with three runs on four hits, including an infield popup with two outs that fell in no-man's land between shortstop and third base against reliever Allen.
A resilient Michigan team answered the call, loading the bases with two outs in the top of the ninth. Obertop fell behind in the count 0-2 before driving a two-run double to the wall in left, barely missing a grand slam.
Frey and Flores led Michigan with two hits apiece, and Weston turned in a quality start with 6.0 innings of five-hit ball in which he struck out five batters.
