Michigan Takes Nebraska Series with Sunday Victory

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The University of Michigan baseball team played crisp baseball on Sunday (March 27) as the Wolverines defeated Nebraska, 6-1, at Haymarket Park to win the season-opening series in a matchup of preseason Big Ten Conference favorites.
Michigan hurlers Jacob Denner (3-2) and Noah Rennard (save, two) limited Nebraska to six hits in a superb pitching and defensive display by the Wolverines in cold conditions, with the game time "real feel" temperature at the minimum of 28 degrees allowable to start a competition.
In the second inning, Michigan grabbed a 2-0 lead as Riley Bertram sent an RBI double to the wall in right field, and Jordon Rogers followed with an RBI groundout.
Matt Frey made it a 3-0 game in the third inning when he connected for his third home run of the series. Max Anderson answered that with a homer of his own with two outs in the bottom of the frame, marking Nebraska's first round-tripper of the weekend.
Things settled in until the seventh inning when Michigan loaded the bases with one out against three Nebraska hurlers. Frey answered the call again, plating the fourth run with a groundout to second base before Clark Elliott came across with the fifth run on a swing-and-miss passed ball.
It was Frey again in the ninth as the graduate student provided another insurance run when he pulled a sharp grounder through an infield shift to score Elliott (walk) to make it a 6-1 game.
Rennard relieved Denner with two runners on base and two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, getting a harmless fly ball to end the inning before scattering three hits against three strikeouts to earn his second save.
Seven different players registered hits, with Jimmy Obertop and Frey leading the way with two.
Michigan will return home to Ray Fisher Stadium on Wednesday (March 30) when the Wolverines host Oakland University at 4 p.m.
