ARLINGTON, Texas -- The University of Michigan baseball team fell to Kansas State, 10-6, on Sunday night (Feb. 22) at Globe Life Field in the final game of the College Baseball Series.
Michigan (4-3) trailed 9-3 entering the seventh but cut into the deficit with three runs in the inning. Cade Ladehoff singled with one out, and Brenden Stressler followed with a single that allowed Ladehoff to score after advancing on a groundout. On a 3-2 count, Colby Turner launched his third home run of the weekend, a 411-foot shot to left field, to pull the Wolverines within three. Jack Laffitte added his first career hit later in the frame, but a groundout ended the rally.
Kansas State (6-1) answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh. After a scoreless eighth, Michigan put two aboard to begin the ninth but could not push a run across.
After a quiet first inning, the teams combined for seven runs in the second with Michigan striking first. Joe Longo recorded a two-out double and scored when Elie Kligman reached on a two-base error. Greg Pace Jr. followed with an RBI double to give Michigan a 2-0 lead before Kansas State responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning.
U-M added a run in the third after a leadoff double from Ladehoff. Brayden Jefferis and Stressler followed with singles, with Ladehoff scoring on the second hit. However, Kansas State tacked on four runs across the third and fourth innings to extend its lead to 9-3.
Neither team generated much offense in the fifth or sixth, with just one baserunner apiece during the stretch. Tyler Finkbeiner struck out the side in the sixth for the first three strikeouts of his career as Kansas State held a 9-3 advantage. The Wolverines plated three in the seventh, but the deficit proved too much to overcome.
Ladehoff led Michigan with two runs on two hits, while Stressler also tallied two hits. Stressler and Turner drove in multiple runs. In relief, Finkbeiner, Max Debiec and Grant Bradley combined to allow one run on one hit over the final five innings with four strikeouts.
Michigan will return to action Friday (Feb. 27), opening a three-game series against San Diego at Fowler Park in San Diego, Calif. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. PT, with the game streaming on ESPN+.
