PHOENIX, Ariz. -- With a fourth-consecutive top 10 spring finish, senior Ashley Lau posted her third straight sub-par 54-hole total with a 213 (-3) to pace the 10th-ranked University of Michigan women's golf team to an 887 total today (Sunday, March 27) and post an 11th-place finish at the PING/ASU Invitational played on the Papago Golf Course.
Heading to Arizona to play an event which mirrors the elements of the NCAA Finals, Lau's opening 73 (+1) and a pair of 75s from senior Sophia Trombetta and sophomore Monet Chun gave the Maize and Blue a 301 total in Friday's (March 25) first round. Positioned 13th after day one, the Wolverines moved up three spots after Saturday's second round tally of 287 (-1). In the second 18, Lau carded her sixth sub-70 round (68, -4) and Trombetta tied a season-low with a 71 (-1) to aid U-M's ninth sub-par team tally of the season. With a closing even par 72 from Lau, U-M closed with a 299 to drop on spot and finish 11th with an 887 total.
"We dug ourselves a bit of a hole in the first round," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "Overall, our short games weren't quite as sharp as they've been. With that said, we got some great feel throughout the week for desert golf, and did some good adjusting to the firmness of the course. It's a good time to reset and double down on some short game work as we head into an exciting part of our season."
As she has done all spring, Lau paced U-M as she led the Wolverines with her fourth straight spring event using her third straight sub-par 54-hole total. With her 213 (-3), she tallied her fourth-straight top 10 finish, tying for 10th along with four others in the 84-player field.
"Ashley simply worked hard to grind out a very solid finish this week," said Dowling. "It shows how much class she has as a golfer to finish so well in a great field without her absolute best. She's a pure joy to watch compete and her game is so solid top to bottom."
In her first start since the end of October, Trombetta bookended rounds of 75 around a season-low-tying 71 (-1) to tie for 43rd with a 221 total. Chun's 225 (75-73-77) helped her round out the top three Wolverines as she tied for 51st.
Before heading back to Ann Arbor, Lau and junior Hailey Borja will head to Augusta, Ga., for the 2022 Augusta National Women's Amateur, Wednesday through Saturday (March 30-April 2). Starting with 36 holes at the Island and Bluff nines at Champions Retreat Golf Club, on Wednesday and Thursday (March 30-31) the field will be cut down to the top 30, who will advance to the final round at Augusta National.
The rest of the Wolverines will return to Ann Arbor and prep for the final spring tournament before the start of postseason. U-M will head to Indiana to play in the Hoosier Invitational at the Pfau Course at Indiana University. The two-day, 54-hole event will be play Saturday and Sunday, April 9-10, in Bloomington.
