NORMAN, Okla. -- The No. 1-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team fell to No. 2 Oklahoma, 198.475-197.900, in a hard-fought road meet Friday night (March 4) at the Lloyd Noble Center.
The Wolverines (12-1) battled against the Sooners (11-2) -- who had not lost a meet at the Lloyd Noble Center since 2014 -- with four team scores of 49.400 or higher.
Senior Natalie Wojcik took home her 21st career all-around title with a 39.725, scoring a 9.900 or better on all four events, including a 9.950 on both the uneven bars and beam to tie for second in both events. Junior Gabby Wilson placed second on the vault with a team-high 9.950 and Abby Heiskell tied a career-best 9.925 to tie for second on the beam with Wojcik.
Michigan had a strong start in the first rotation as Abby Brenner and Naomi Morrison started off with matching 9.875s before Heiskell scored a 9.900 and Wojcik led the Wolverines with a 9.950. In what was promised to be a great meet, U-M and Oklahoma went into the second rotation tied at 49.450.
Wilson led Michigan on the vault in the anchor spot with a 9.950, while Reyna Guggino and Wojcik started off the rotation with back-to-back 9.900s. However, OU took the lead after two complete rotations, 99.275-98.900.
The Wolverines put together a 49.600 on the floor behind four final scores of 9.900 or better. Junior Sierra Brooks and Wojcik led Michigan on the floor with matching 9.950s and Morrison scored a 9.925. Finally, Wilson notched a 9.900 for the Maize and Blue.
Morrison had a solid start for U-M on the beam with a 9.825 and Wilson followed it up with a 9.900 in the second spot. The Wolverines continued to battle, but matching 9.925s from Heiskell and Wojcik to close out the meet were not enough to surpass the Sooners as the Wolverines fell, 198.475-197.900 on the road.
Michigan will honor the careers of its three seniors on Saturday (March 12) at 4 p.m. when it welcomes No. 6Â Auburn and West Virginia to Crisler Center.
