
Maize Out! Michigan to Host No. 7 Rutgers on Senior Day

The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team will honor 11 members of its senior class on Saturday (April 16) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium when the Wolverines host the No. 7 Rutgers Scarlet Knights. The contest, slated for a noon start, will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU, with Anish Shroff and Quint Kessenich on the call.
Numerous promotions are on tap for the Wolverines' final regular season home game. The contest will be a 'Maize Out' as well as Dollar Day, with $1 tickets, hot dogs, chips, and fountain drinks; Maize Poms will also be provided to all fans in attendance.
Wolverine Bites
• Prior to the contest, the Wolverines will pay respects to 11 members of U-M's senior class in Hakan Atillasoy, Bryce Clay, Andrew Darby, Ronald Fisher III, Zach Johnson, John Kiracofe, Gavin Legg, Brandon Murphy, Nick Rowlett, Drake Schaffner and Jackson Zaugg.
• Junior attackman Josh Zawada ranks second in U-M history for points in a career (138; 77 goals, 61 assists) and is now seven points away from breaking Ian King's (2014-17) program record of 144. His average of 5.58 points per game ranks sixth in the country and tops the Big Ten, while his goals per game (3.08) and assists (2.50) rank first and second in the conference, respectively. Additionally, his 66 points so far this year are a new U-M Lacrosse program record for points in a single season.
• Freshman Ryan Cohen ranks No. 56 nationally in points per game (3.80), which is third in the country for points amongst freshman. His 45 points are a new U-M freshman record for points in a season. In all, he ranks fourth on the team in goals (22), third in assists (23) and third in points.
• Fellow attackman sophomore Michael Boehm enters the week with 55 points, the second-most in a season in program history. He trails the current number of 66 held by Zawada and has already broken the previous single-season record of 48. In his brief U-M career, he has 91 points (52 goals, 39 assists), which puts him nine away from becoming the seventh Wolverine in history to surpass 100 points in a career. In addition, he ranks fourth in the conference in points per game (4.58), fourth in assists per game (2.00) and fifth in goals per game (2.58).
• As a team, U-M ranks third in the country in points per game (24.17) and ninth in scoring offense (14.75 goals per game). The defensive unit ranks No. 10, allowing 10.33 goals/game.
• Sophomore goalie Shane Carr is No. 9 in the NCAA in goals-against-average (10.01 per game) and No. 11 in save percentage (56 percent). Over the last six games, the first-year starter is averaging 14.60 stops per contest.
• The Wolverines have excelled at the faceoff dot with a 59 percent mark as a team to rank No. 10 in the country. The tandem of sophomore Justin Wietfeldt and junior Nick Rowlett have developed as one of the best duos in the country. Wietfeldt ranks sixth in the nation, winning 92-of-150 (61 percent) with 48 ground balls. Rowlett ranks 17th and sits at 57 percent (103-of-180) with 61 pickups.
Scouting Rutgers
Michigan owns one win in seven tries against the Scarlet Knights (2015), with the last matchup in Ann Arbor last season resulting in a 13-12 Rutgers victory. Zawada tallied three goals and one assist for the Wolverines while Boehm added in two goals and four assists. Rowlett tied his career-high with 13 ground balls and also went 18-of-29 at the dot.
The No. 7 Scarlet Knights are 10-2 on the season including a 2-1 Big Ten record. This season has seen them secure wins over No. 10 Army, No. 19 Loyola and No. 8 Ohio State, while falling to No. 7 Princeton and No. 1 Maryland.
Rutgers lost its most recent game to Maryland on April 10, 17-9. Sophomore midfielder Shane Knobloch and senior attackman Brian Cameron paced the offense with two goals apiece. Senior faceoff specialist Sam Stephan went 6-of-18 at the dot and senior goalie Colin Kirst made 15 saves.
The Rutgers offensive unit currently ranks second in the nation in goals (188), netting an average of 15.67 goals per game. Attackmen Ross Scott and Mitch Bartolo both rank in the top 10 in the Big Ten in points.
Kirst ranks No. 13 in the nation in saves, with 137 so far on the campaign, also ranking second in the Big Ten behind Shane Carr for most saves.
