
Michigan Drops Heartbreaker to No. 7 Rutgers After Furious Fourth-Quarter Rally

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team gave the No. 7 Rutgers Scarlet Knights a scare with a major fourth-quarter comeback before falling 13-12 on Saturday (April 16) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. Trailing 11-6 after three quarters, U-M outscored the Rutgers 6-1 to start the fourth quarter and tied the game with 6:46 remaining, but the Scarlet Knights tallied the game-winner with 3:44 to play.
Michigan (7-6, 0-4 B1G) jumped out to a 1-0 lead halfway through the first quarter with sophomore midfielder Justin Brown scoring his first of two goals on the day. That would be U-M's only lead of the afternoon, though they later tied the game twice in the fourth quarter.
While Michigan's offensive unit struggled to put goals on the board early, the defense pulled through with three goals from long-poles Ryan Schriber, Jack Whitney and Jackson Zaugg.
The score stood at 11-6 in favor of Rutgers (11-3, 3-1 B1G) heading into the fourth quarter, giving U-M an opportunity to make a late comeback. Sophomore attackman Isaac Aronson scored just over a minute into the final segment before the offensive unit exploded for three more goals in less than a minute.
Freshman attackman Ryan Cohen scored back-to-back goals 40 seconds apart to bring the score to 11-9 before senior faceoff specialist Nick Rowlett scored his first goal of the season to bring U-M within one with 11:19 remaining.
Junior midfielder Jake Bonomi then scored back-to-back goals to tie the game at 11 and 12. Rutgers scored its final goal with 3:44 left, and the Wolverines were unable to find another equalizer.
Junior attackman Josh Zawada scored one goal on the day to come within six of Ian King's program-record 144 points.
In goal, sophomore Shane Carr made 18 saves. Senior defender Andrew Darby accounted for two caused turnovers to go along with two ground balls. U-M also went 19-of-22 on clears.
Michigan dominated at faceoff, going 21-of-30. Sophomore Justin Wietfeldt was 12-of-15 and Rowlett went 9-of-15 at the dot.
The Wolverines will close out the regular season by traveling to Columbus, Ohio, to take on the No. 9 Ohio State Buckeyes on Sunday (April 24) at 7 p.m. The matchup will be broadcast on Big Ten Network, with Joe Beninati and Mark Dixon on the call.
