EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Senior RHP Alex Storako was dominant from the circle, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning, as the No. 23-ranked University of Michigan softball team earned a 3-0 win over Michigan State on Tuesday evening (April 19) at Secchia Stadium. With the win, the Wolverines swept the home-and-home series against their in-state rival.
The Spartans broke up Storako's no-hit bid with a leadoff bloop single to right-field in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Wolverine ace set down the next three MSU batter on 10 pitches, including a three-pitch punchout to end the contest.
Storako (18-4) struck out 13 -- her 12th game this season with double-digit strikeouts -- and allowed just the one hit and four walks to secure her eighth complete-game shutout.
Michigan used a set of three doubles -- all to a similar spot in left-center field -- to break through in the top of the third inning. Freshman outfielder Ellie Sieler and graduate student outfielder Kristina Burkhardt went back-to-back to lead off the inning and push across the go-ahead run before senior catcher Hannah Carson followed suit two batters later to plate Burkhardt from second.
The Wolverines took advantage of another double to add to their lead in the fourth. Junior outfielder Audrey LeClair led off the inning with a two-base bloop down the left-field line, advanced on a wild pitch in the dirt and scored on a double play into the shift.
Four of the Wolverines' five hits in the contest were doubles, while Sieler paced the Michigan offense with two hits from the No. 9 spot.
Michigan (27-13, 7-6 Big Ten) will continue its rivalry week with a three-game home series this weekend against Ohio State at the Wilpon Complex, home of Alumni Field. The series kicks off with a 6 p.m. slate on Friday (April 22) before continuing at 2 p.m. on Saturday (April 23) and noon on Sunday (April 24). Tickets are still available through the U-M Ticket Office. Sunday's finale will be broadcast live on ESPN2.
