PALO ALTO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field distance squad concluded its 2022 outdoor season opener Saturday (April 2) at the Stanford Invitational.
In the Wolverines' lone event of the day, multiple-time All-American and Big Ten champion Aurora Rynda led the way at 800 meters with a time of 2:06.93 for fifth in the fastest section of the 800 meters. She was doubling back after running a career-best 4:21.84 at 1,500 meters less than 24 hours earlier.
As the projections currently stand, the time puts her right on the bubble of qualification to the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds as one of the top 48 individuals in that event in the East Region.
The reigning Big Ten Outdoor champion and two-time 800-meter All-American will likely run faster in the weeks to come. Earlier this winter, she ran a near-identical 2:06.92 in her indoor opener before blasting a school-record 2:02.89 a week later. It is also faster than her 2021 debut of 2:07.39 from this same weekend a year ago, and she went on to win the Big Ten crown, run 2:01.35, and finish as a second-team All-American.
True first-year collegian Samantha Hastie was the next-fastest Wolverine in her official Michigan debut, running 2:10.53 for second in the fourth of six sections, just edging out teammate Amber Gall by .01 from a previous section.
The distance squad will be joined by their sprints, jumps and throws teammates this coming Thursday through Saturday (April 7-9) as the Wolverines compete as a full team for the first time at the Duke Invitational.
