DURHAM, N.C. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team kicked off the first of three days at the Duke Invitational on Thursday (April 7) with competition in the two-day heptathlon.
Through the first four events of seven total, Theresa Mayanja is hovering near career-best pace as she racked up 3,133 points on the first day. She is sixth overall, just 50 points behind fourth place.
In her first heptathlon at Michigan, Clare McNamara is in 14th with 2,751 points.
The duo started strong in the 100-meter hurdles as Mayanja clocked 14.07 (+1.7m/s wind) for 968 points, and McNamara ran a career-best 16.10 (+1.7m/s) for 702.
Both women were solid in the high jump, as Mayanja cleared 1.57m (5-1.75) and McNamara made it over 1.54m (5-0.75) for 701 and 666 points, respectively.
The duo shone brightest relative to the field in the shot put, as both women set outdoor career bests and came within centimeters of overall lifetime bests. Mayanja went 12.27m (40-3) for 679 points and the second-place spot in the event, while McNamara heaved 11.72m (38-5.5) for 643 points and fourth place.
Mayanja closed out the day with a 26.14 (+0.3m/s) run at 200 meters for 785 points, and McNamara ended with a 26.66 (+0.8m/s) effort for 740 points.
Should Mayanja equal or improve upon her season's best performances in Friday's remaining three events that begin at 2 p.m. -- long jump, javelin and 800 meters -- she will have a chance to overthrow her career-best 5,069 points from last year's Big Ten Championships.
In addition to the conclusion of the heptathlon, Friday will also feature field events beginning at 9:30 a.m. and action on the track that gets underway at 6:30 p.m. Portions of the track session can be streamed on the ACC Network Extra digital platform.
