Michigan Drops Series Opener at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan baseball team dropped the opening game of a three-game series at Purdue Friday (April 29) by a score of 18-4 at Alexander Field.
After a Matt Frey homer put the Wolverines (22-17, 8-5 B1G) on top in the second inning, Purdue scored three times with two outs in the bottom of the frame as a leadoff hit batter, a fielder's choice that didn't result in an out, a seeing-eye single and a two-run infield single gave the Boilermakers a 3-1 edge.
Jake Jarvis gave the home team a 5-1 lead in the third inning with a two-run homer to left field that followed a one-out walk. Curtis Washington, Jr. then made it a 6-1 game through five innings with a two-out single up the middle.
Purdue (24-13, 5-6 B1G) chased U-M starter Connor O'Halloran from the game in the sixth inning as the Boilermakers took control of the contest with two more runs for an 8-1 lead.
O'Halloran didn't have his best stuff as the sophomore lefty allowed seven runs on nine hits in his 5.1 innings of work. He did strike out seven batters but also hit three and walked two.
Purdue rallied for 10 more runs across the seventh and eighth innings, and while Jimmy Obertop added a monster 422-ft. solo homer in the seventh inning and Frey plated two runs in the eighth with a hard single, the Wolverines never seriously threatened. Frey and Joe Stewart led Michigan with two hits each.
The teams will return to Alexander Field for the second game of the Big Ten weekend series on Saturday (April 30). First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
