
Michigan Advances to B1G Semis with Quarterfinal Win over Indiana

MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 7 ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team earned a 4-2 win over Indiana on Friday (April 29) at the Nielson Tennis Center in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Conference Tournament. Michigan will now advance to the semifinals, where it will face the winner of Illinois and Wisconsin.
Michigan (20-3) quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead winning the doubles point for the 20th time this season. Adjusting the lineup slightly, Ondrej Styler and Nino Ehrenschneider teamed up at No. 1 and took a 6-3 match off of Patrick Fletchall and Ilya Tirapolsky. As soon as that match was secured, Andrew Fenty and Gavin Young nailed their match point in a 6-2 win over Luka Vukovic and Michael Andre. Patrick Maloney and Nick Beaty led 5-2 on court 2 before it was called.
The Wolverines looked to be in control as they took five of six first sets and No. 63-ranked Fenty cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Vukovic at No. 3 singles. But the Hoosiers wouldn't go lightly, forcing third sets in the four remaining matches.
No. 61-ranked Jacob Bickersteth won his fifth straight and 21st singles match of the season, taking down Singh 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4. The match pushed Michigan ahead 3-0 with a battle ahead.
Maloney's 11-match win streak came to an end at No. 2 as Fletchall was able to recover from a 6-2 first-set loss to win back-to-back 6-4 sets. After splitting the first two sets, Beaty and Tirapolsky were knotted at 4-4 in the third set before Tirapolsky took the final two points and cut the Indiana deficit to two, 4-2.
No. 30 Styler was locked in a battle on court 1 with Carson Haskins as the two traded points on their way to a tiebreaker in the first set. Tied up at 7-7, Styler went on a run to take the match 7-6 (7). Styler never trailed in his second set, jumping out to a 3-1 lead and taking it 6-3 to clinch the match point for the Wolverines. It was Styler's 19th singles win of the season and third straight.
Ehrenschneider, ranked No. 103, went up 4-0 in his first set before settling for a 6-2 score. After falling 6-1 in the second set, he led 4-3 in the final set before the match was called.Â
Th victory marks Michigan's eighth 20-win season and first since 2018 when the Wolverines advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16.
Michigan will face the winner of the Illinois/Wisconsin match in the semifinal tomorrow (April 30) at 3 p.m. CT. The match will be streamed on B1G+
